Right well as you know, the rules of this forum has changed.. thanks to.. well me nagging Matt tbh :P
So, I thought i'd start up the first discussion abiding by the new rules :P
What is the right age for people to start having sexual relationships, or as it is so often nowadays just sex?
Obviously the legal age is 16, but in all honesty this is rarely listened to, as we all know.. the Government are actually more bothered about preventing teenage pregnancies therefore there is more of a push for "safe sex" than ban underage sex.
I think the legal age is about right to be honest, a lot of people I know that lost it younger regret it..
What do you lot think?

I think the age for gay sex should be 16 (which it currently is)
And for straight sex it should be 18+. I say this because alot of 16-17 year olds won't have that much experience of looking after their own and may need parenting classes. Also they would have to drop outta college/school to look after the kid while their parent(s) are at work.

Well, with the gay/straight argument - No. Simply no. Wouldnt work..
I think that instead of pushing the 16+ Rule, they should think about the fact that DOES ANYONE TAKE ANY NOTICE?
Instead, they should promote Safety more.

Not really.. And besides.. People would protest on Sexuality discrimination (yeah?)

Those people are plain stupid. Even if they've been drinking.
And yeah, People do. But many people dont for reasons like - They are too 'ard (Stupid) OR They have a valid reason - Birth control, Clear of STDs.
I agree, some people dont, But a large majority do.

Exactly..?
And its Sexuality discrimination.
But couldnt people claim they are homosexual JUST to have 'Underage' sex? - You cant prove if someones Gay or straight really..
Also, People become sexually active at different times.. And if they are sensible about it, Know what they are getting themselves into AND know the risks and how to solve problems.. Why not.. I mean.. Yeah.. Young people (12 -) Cant really make good enough decisions on things like this, I mean you do need knowledge and be with someone you trust enough to share it with..

That's not true at all. Most people will wear a condom, which is good.
The Government have realised that most people don't pay attention to the law, hence why it is only enforced if one of the sexual partners is over 16 and the other under.
But they do promote safe sex, with schemes like the "C Card" and free condoms in most doctors clinics etc.

ugh. you're such an embaressment. 16 is a fine legal age for ALL sex but really you should just do it when you're ready.

I dont know tbh what the right age should be, I had sex at 15

There isn't one, some people think the "right" time is when you're married, when you're in a relationship for a certain amount of time or other beliefs so it can be any age at all. I'd just say the right time is when you want to, there isn't a specific age, if you're mature and happy to then why not & the legal age is fine.

Legal age being 16 works because a lot of people are obviously ready at 13/14 as a lot of people do it at this age (certainly a massive amount of people have sex underage) but the legal age being higher rather than down at 14 or whatever means that the likelihood of people MUCH younger (say under 12) trying to have sex should be lower. If the legal age was 14 then it stands to reason that people under this age will then want to do it as being underage always has that thrill to it, like it or not.
As for the "right" age, that depends on different people. Some people are fine to do it at 12 maybe but I know I certainly wasn't back then, and some people I've heard haven't been ready until into their 20s
16 is fine
15 if your cool :8
legally, i think the age should probably stay at 16.
morally, i think you should be able to have sex whenever you feel ready. if you feel you "trust" someone at 14, and you WANT to have sex, as long as it's safe; why the hell not?
freedom, maaan.

I agree with this. I think it should stay at 16, but if people want to do it underage and feel comfortable then they should be allowed to.

The way the world is these days, people have sex like its no big deal. I'm not one of these people who believe in no sex before marriage or anything, but I just know loads of people who have just basically had sex with anyone (even if they wern't together) or a week or two into the relationship.
I mean what's the point in that? Sex loses all meaning then tbh. That's just my opinion anyway.

sex in general lost a lot of meaning to a lot of people a long time ago.
it's society's problem that sex means nothing to young people anymore, not the young person's issue.

Well we have the highest teenage pregnancy rate in Europe so i think we should be looking at what ther Countries are doing to keep their pregnancy rate low - As we see many teenagers having babies are not capable of looking after their baby. It's babies having babies....
I disagree with what people have said about you should be allowed to have sex when ever your ready. If the Government allowed that to happen then we would see a lot of girls under the age of 16 getting pregnant. A girl at the age of 12 for example may have it all planned out on bringing up a baby but the truth is if she can't bring up herself, then how on earth will she be able to bring up her baby?
The right age to have sex is 16 onwards i think. Though maybe 20+ would be more ideal as people who are 16 - 18 would most likely still be in Education if they were to get pregnant. - This would obviously hold up their Education.
Caution
30-06-2009, 06:21 PM
When you look at the age of consent for other European countries a lot aren't as high as 16, but they don't all get pregnant at a young age. I don't think these other European countries look at the age of consent so much if the age is so young, but they don't pregnant as young. In the UK I think there's a pressure to lose it before 16 just to look good.

Isn't it 18 for legal gay sex?

16 is about right for legal age as its when people leave compulsory education. It should definitely not be any older.
As to when two people should have sex, whenever they both feel they are ready. It all depends on the people involved and will vary dramatically from person to person. As long as people don't feel pressured and do it when they are ready, then that's the right time for them :)

Some girls in my school choose to wear a purity ring, which means they can't have sex until they're 18 or they have promised not to atleast. And I agree with this, they have decided that they don't want to get involved in sexual relationships until a certain age and I tihnk it's fully acceptable. I've even been in a relationship with someone who wore one and it really didn't bother me at all.
So it's about what the individual person wants and not what the law is or what 'everyone' is doing.

I think purity ring is actually no sex before marriage, don't see why it would be 18 year old as it's not exactly significant to anything.

It can depend, either not before marriage or not until a certain age.

Serious... You don't want to be a dad at 16 LOL. Let your hair down for a few more years and then consider starting a family that's what i would do. :P Good luck if you do decide to have one... that's when your 16! Haha.

the legal age here in northern ireland is 17
i think this is right because its a mature age where you could deal with the consquences if something went wrong
i also think its wrong if anyone under 15 are having sex, i dont know why, i guess its because my sisters 15 and i wouldnt like her to be
i also know girls that sleep around who used to be in my year, and most of them are pregnant now so yeaaaaa 17/18 and if your in a relationship :]

Sleeping around and being to stupid to use a comdom aint nessarly linked :p
Plus, what are you saying? You would be fine imaging your sister having sex if she were 17?? Shes your sister, chances are the idea of her having sex will never be something you wana think about lol, so basing age on that dont make alot of sense.

no, i wouldnt mind if she had sex and she was 17
she has a boyfriend at the minate whos my age, 18, and i dont like him because i dont like the thought of him having sex with her, then breaking her heart by leaving her after, because they arent in a proper relationship if you know what i mean.

People gotta make there own mistakes unfortuntaly. There isnt a huge difference in maturety between the ages anyway, so i imagine it would likely be as bad if she was 17 as it would now?
If there just hooking up as opposed to a proper relationship though i'd assume shes aware of what shes doing? or is that not what you meant by proper relationship?

I think that as long as you're above the legal age then it doesn't really matter what age as long as you feel sexually mature, otherwise you could regret it later on.

Although most girls down here just go on the pill because we have free clinic etc and it's always easier. STD's don't exist here except for my Chinese friend who had chlamydia and gave it to loads of people without telling them but yeah that's my view of the world I live in, bad things happen to other people
^its very rare that teenagers are ever IN love tbh
I wouldn't say so. Of course two weeks into a relationship kids going round proclaiming their love for their partner isn't going to amount to much but love is what you make of it - if you truly believe you're in love then you may well be, whatever your age. The real test unfortunately is hindsight, because if you look back after it's ended and still think "yeah, that was love" rather than "I hate that cow and always did" then that shows something more

Like most people have said, theres no age, it's just when you're ready. I do think the legal age of 16 is correct though, it shouldn't be younger than that.

14/15,
16 is a fine legal age for ALL sex but really you should just do it when you're ready.
I think, like people have said, the legal age is fine but they should just keep 'promoting' the safe sex rather than the legal age part.
As long as you are honestly ready and aren't just doing it so you can say "I've had sex" and that you're doing it safe..then surely the age doesn't matter?!
And the people speaking like everyone gets pregnany when they have sex, as long as they're being safe - properly. Then it's fine. Going on the Pill as well as using condoms is what works :p My girlfriend and her friends have all gone on the pill to be extra safe..

lol @ geraint.
Personally i think around 18 is a good age, at least in the US (which is what the legal limit is here). Only because thats around when most people get to Uni which is when sex becomes more of a norm than it was in college. And people just seem to mature a lot once they're living independent of their parents.
I'd say about 18-20. I don't really believe in abstinence. But 18-20 is a good estimate of when you're ready.

Depending on the age in your country or state, 16 is the best age because if you do it when you are younger and don't use protection or the protection doesnt work then your at risk of a teenage pregnancy which harms the body and can cause majour health issues. Between 16 and 18 is usually known as when pubity starts to stop.

I think it's all about knowing when you're ready. There's no set age for that. However, I do believe that when you're 12, 13 or something, you may think you know it all and that you're ready but most people are still way too naive at that point. I don't believe in having to wait till you're married or anything either.
