View Full Version : Request rule change

Is there anyway I can request to get a rule changed?
I got warned twice for "bumping" a thread twice because it was older than 2 weeks old but it was basically right at the top of the topics page.
I just feel like getting warned twice for this is a bit OTT because if I can't reply to it then why not close it? If you understand where im coming from.

Hello,
You didn't get any official warning or infraction but basically a PM reminding you of the rules. Normally if users bump threads they get warned depending on their previous rule breakings. Threads get closed for bumping between 10-14 days. You did post in a thread from April and we are now in July.

In some forums though it is in fairness ok surely? Such as in the web dev tutorial sub-forum you can bump as much as you like? So perhaps you should outline where and where it is not appropriate to bump more than a couple of weeks.

Normally you can only bump in certain sections if your adding new information but can no longer edit your first post.
A12. Do not multiple post - Multiple posting is allowed after the 15 minutes edit time has passed only if you are adding new information.
A15. Do not bump threads - If the thread is old, make a new thread instead. You can reply to an inactive thread as long as the post contributes something worthwhile to the discussion being held at the time. This rule does not apply to stuck threads.

There wouldn't be enough hours in the day to close all threads over 14 days old. If a thread is felt valuable enough members apply to 'stick it' so that there are really no time limits on those. If you think about it if the person who started the thread hasn't back for 14 days and in your case a couple of months then he thinks it is ' a dead topic' too.
These rules are pretty much in place for deliberate 'bumpers' who just do it to annoy or get their post count up. In your case it seems accidental but at least you know now. :)

Something else I'd like to add to the excellent responses provided by the moderation department above is that, remembering that the thread you bumped was last posted in at the end of may (we are now in July), the thread you bumped was asking for advice, as Catzsy said the thread starter hadn't replied in a long while so possibly he considered the thread dead too, therefore he probably didn't need advice anymore :)
As Matt said, you didn't recieve an official warning or anything, but we do see your point, it's just not plausible.

Here's a suggestion, to avoid bumping why not set the forum to only display threads that are no more than 14 days old by default, this is a built in setting which you can see at the bottom under display options when viewing a forum. If users wish to have the forum show all threads they can do so in their user CP. Surely this will avoid all accidental bumping? The forum search will still show old threads though, obviously.
But some forums are less active than others, so older threads might be at the top of the list, I don't see how that's bumping them as they're already at the top.

Well I got warned for posting in an inactive thread but I was contributing something worthwhile to the discussion. So basically I got warned for nothing?

You didn't get warned you got a PM reminder.

Well, it was a if I do it again i'll get refered to a super moderator.

The super moderator would then look at all the occasions you had bumped a thread, and if each one was justified they would just remind you of the rule yet again.
The rule is in place for a reason, in my opinion that thread did not need anything adding to it, hence why it had laid dormant for over a month.

Ok well im sorry, the thread was basically right at the top of the topic I didn't think to look at the date? I just replied.

There you go then, nothing will come of it, I was only doing what the moderator guide says, think yourself lucky, a year or two ago it would habe been an immediate infraction:P
I liked the idea someone mentioned of setting the forum to show threads from the past 2 weeks.

We didn't warn back then or even inform the member, just closed the thread with an edit and moved on.

Could swear my first ever infraction was for bumping...

Can't have been when I was a (super) moderator then, which was Sep 07 'till Feb 08. Was probably more likely to get something like that when they first started using the infractions system; when infractions didn't expire and a perm ban was about 4 or something.

Yupp I joined in the midst of infractions being brought in in replacement of user notes.
I wasn't around 07-08 :)

You got a pm reminder as you bumped a thread which was in the region of two months old when the limit is 14 days. You say youself it was inactive.:S
You may find it useful to check the date of the last post next time. You may have been contributing to the thread but that is a different rule altogether. Knowingly replying to a 'dead' topic after the time limit is against the rules so the moderator correctly sent you the pm and it wasn't for nothing. Thanks. :)

I see what you're saying, if forums are that inactive we should probably be doing something about it :P We'll probably merge that forum with the parent forum so that its a little more active.
