Hey,

I am going to build my own Desktop computer, spending no more than £900.

However I do have a few questions:

Where can I find cases for the Computer (E.G. The outside bit)?
What can I expect to get for my £900?
Are nVidia GC's better than ATI GC's?
Thanks for reading,

Hope to get some answers soon :)

Dom

P.S. +Rep to all good answers!

EDIT: I AM prepared to go over £900, IF there is a significant difference (Hopefully not though)

Tim.

I was working at Corus a few weeks back, and they managed to build a pretty good spec for £150.00 Probably cause they buy in bulk. I had a look at the site they order from but no luck if i find it, i'll pm you it.

I know some:

www.ebuyer.com (http://www.ebuyer.com)
or
www.meshcomputers.com (http://www.meshcomputers.com) - I'm buying from there

What do you need for the £900? Monitor(s), keyboard and mouse along with the base unit?

What will you be using the PC for? What sort of storage capacity are you thinking of? Do you want to buy a genuine OS or are you going to sort an OS out another way?

Im a legal boy me :D

For the £900 I would expect:

- Keyboard
- Monitor (20in ish)
- Mouse
- Obviously the desktop itself.

PC will be used for Gaming
Capacity for Storage not to important, atleast 250gb I guess. Not hugely worried about that though.
Would like it to be Intel based.
Genuine OS most likely but I can add that to the cost (over £900) if needed.

However obviously the cheaper the better. Just I am not sure what I should expect for the £900, so just asked on here as I know some people on here know alot about this sort of thing :)

Are nVidia GC's better than ATI GC's?

No. Nor are they worse. It is down to personal preference or price. Generally, ATI have lower prices cards than the equal performing Nvidia card.

Thats mainly why I wondered :)

I know nVidia are more expensive, so was wandering if they are actually better!

Well I'd recommend using Windows 7 release candidate until 7 comes out. No point buying Vista when 7 is around the corner. You can pre-orded 7 and get it half price.

I will look for some components later, busy right now.

Mesh computers are good if you are nervous about building your own. What you should do is buy all the parts from the same place for ease and also so you know it's secure. eBuyer is great for it. Also, if you take a look at my threads and look at my PC build, you can take my £530 build and then customize it to what you want, if you would like that.

Ok, look here for pre-ordering Windows 7 (£50 for Home Premium) http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windows/buy/offers/pre-order.aspx

http://www.uploadpicz.com/images/37Picture_1.png

That's around £865 so far (including Windows). This does not include a case, keyboard or mouse as you may not like what I like.

Look at cases here: http://www.ebuyer.com/store/Components/cat/Cases
Keyboards & mice: http://www.ebuyer.com/store/Peripherals/cat/Keyboards-&-Mice

Expect the total cost to be around £920-970 depending on how expensive you go with the case etc.

You may want to buy a SSD to put your operating system & program files on, which would make booting the PC and loading programs very fast.

Aww man you're lucky, I've only got 600 quid saved for a gaming PC and I'm currently out of a job.

The other problem I have is, even if I bought these components, I wouldn't be able to build it as I am clueless about that.

Does anyone have any guides or anything?

Thanks very much Nick, the case as far as it looks smart (I am tempted by lighting (like on Alienware products) :D

Apart from the computer loading faster, what else would I get with Windows 7?

Thanks again!

The money bit is just because I am fortuante to be in a fairly wealthy family. And the components etc, my sisters boyfriend works with computers (hence how I can manage to build my own!) As far as I know its actually fairly straight forward for the most part. E.G. The Motherboard is quite straight forward to use, as RAm will only fit in the right place.

This might help slightly;

Youtube is your friend. I watched a load of videos on how to build your own PC and a month later I did it without any troubles.. Go for it!

Yes, easily for flight sim.

And with cases I tend to go for something fairly cheap and plain as I don't like silly lights to distract me and I'm not particularly bothered about how it looks, which is why I'm not choosing one. Keyboard and mouse is also personal preference. Look to spend between £25-70 for both. I don't know whether you want a wireless stuff or not?

Good :D

My current PC can't handle it - Mind you my current stupid pc won't even work for half my games since Direct x 9 refuses to work properly ;l

May I just ask what you do like in computer cases. I like sleek modern things, or black.

What kind of games are you intending to use Niall?

---

I am also intending that getting a better build will save having to buy a new [pc every couple of years.

Once made, would I be able to UPDATE it later on?

Mostly Team Fortress 2, Left 4 dead, though if I get a proper gaming rig I'll get many more games, the only reason I play those two at the moment is because my computer is rubbish and can't run anything else.

Yes, that case would be fine. It comes with a 450W PSU which will need to be tossed aside as it's no good for you.

I probably won't get that as the room it is going in is red :(

Wouldn't match :D

The source engine is designed to run on naff computers, it's why it's such a damn good engine. Also it was made in 2002 :P.

Also building PCs is easy, I wasted money and bought books about it (Waste of money tbh), basically if the cable fits then it's where it goes (Hopefully)

£900 pounds seems a bit steep for me, most people spend £600 pounds on everything, and that can make a really future proof pc.
I spent 540 pounds on my pc and 180 on my 22" screen.
As for cases I personally think Antec are a really good make, I use their 300 series but there is a 900 series as well but that is usually used for over £1k pc's.
Heres where I bought my case from:
http://www.microdirect.co.uk/Home/Product/16013/Antec-case-Nine-Hundred-Gaming-case-Black-full

Microdirect is a really good website, they deliver usually within two days and play.com is really good as well + free delivery :>

Antec are really good, but use the 1200 series. E-ATX transform!

At least he isn't spending £2000 on it :eusa_whis

What a waste of money Dom, all you do is go on Habbo, Runescape and Habbox Forum.

When I built my Gaming Rig I started playing loads of Gfx intensive games...

Yeah its only when you actually get your set up that your going to play graphic intensive games, not like I'm gunna play crysis on my four year old laptop...

And I would have bought the 900 or 1200 series but I really didnt need it :D The 300 was perfect for my components plus plenty of fan space at the front if I need to add :D

Some people may not appreciate being talked to that way

Also the Antec 1200 is really useful for cable management and HDD storage...
