- Home Premium
- Professional
- Ultimate
Probably go for Premium could always get a decent Bit Locker software off
the internet for free or for a small price.
Windows XP Mode looks promising so it would probably be between Premium and Professional.

be careful with xp mode, your processor might not have hardware visualization or something it needs..

Pro as i expect it to be the one i can get free of MSDNAA (this based on the fact vista business is the vista copy up now, and XP pro is the xp copy :p)

Why would anyone need anything other than home premium?

XP mode is aimed at businesses who have software that was developed for old operating systems and have kept their computers on old OSs to keep them compatable. I can't think of a use for XP mode except for that tbh, unless you want to run reeally old games.

Xp mode with seemless ie6 is useful for lazy web devs :P
Though in Truth my choice is mostly about price

I have a few old games that will only work on xp not Vista and... Just maybe a few minor problems with Hardware/software with W7? That could occur.

I'm hopefully going to pre-order the premium one.

Professional. Don't need everything in Ultimate, but I want more than Home Premium.

After Vista I am not taking my chances with a watered down version of Windows (XP-Mode all the way!). When I am eventually forced to use a variant of Windows that is not XP, I'll be torrenting Ultimate.

After seeing that, Premium seems the best.

Hard to say, it's definitely between Premium and Pro.
If I pirate it then Ultimate and if I buy it then Home Premium.
Does anyone know if the pre-order for half price offer is the retail edition (activation on 3 PCs) or am I barking up the wrong tree?

To answer your questions, I'm buying Ultimate because I need BittLocker and the system speedup, I also need to have the option to boot from a VHD which I do almost everyday ;)

Why would anyone need anything other than home premium? Thanks for posting the comparison I was looking for one, if I remember correctly there was a big price jump from Home Premium > Professional anyway.
I'll go for Home Premium probably, Professional just doesn't have any useful features for me.
Premium probably
Then download bitlocker to go reader and see if that works
What ever version I can use with a TechNet subscription :P

It looks like Play.com are getting in on the action now:
http://www.play.com/PC/PCs/3-/379971/2-/Promo.html
They even say on there that it won't be shipping with Internet Explorer, which looks like more than ebuyer has to say on the situation (I can't see a page on Windows 7 at least, just Vista products with free upgrades).
EDIT: I'm assuming the full version works like an upgrade that you just chuck in the computer and hope it installs? I've never played with an Operating System in that sense before and it's only just dawned on me :P

I'm going to add on to my answer aand say either get premium or professional... or wait. Because apparently my dad says that Department of Health are going to be using Windows 7 so will sell the OSs to staff 'on the cheap' or w/e they call it nowadays. :P

Uhmm well i'm sure they were saying College students will get some sort of a "reasonable discount"
If this is the case... Oh you lucky ppl... :(
That XP mode will hopefully work with my scanner, it worked on my old XP PC but on this Vista one, it won't do a thing.

Thinking of Professional as I have Vista Ultimate (Love Vista) and I never needs the bitlocker and different language accounts

Yeh, hopefully a price war starts :P (Since Microsoft have said who the retailers are, hopefully that will lead companies to have to lower price further to attract attention :P)

SUPER Quick Question:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/142780
Is that an upgrade package to Windows 7?
EDIT: Only wandering as some packages of Vista say 'Upgrade' and some say 'Windows 7 Upgrade Offer' ~ So I am not sure?

No, that is for upgrading something like XP to Vista.

pwned.
Is that alot? :P
Also, people seem to be given mixed information on upgrading - does it actually have to be done on a clean install? Some places say there's an upgrade selection while some of the shops say "Note: Windows 7 needs to be done on a clean install" so it's very puzzling what to believe - thus why I'm holding out on whether or not to buy :P
Stephen!

I told him to pre-order it while it was £50 but noooooooooooo he didn't listen!
And it's the retail edition. No upgrade crap.

28-07-2009, 01:26 AM
So clean install it is? I'm too lazy to transfer crap to the external, especially when it was set up wrong :'(
Stephen!

I believe so. Even so, I wouldn't bother upgrading. It never goes well and there can always be complications

You did, but back then I would be the one paying for it, this time I'm getting it on the grounds of "testing applications and deployment in schools" so it made no odds to me :P
I always do a clean install, new OS, new install, I just redirect My Music, My Documents etc etc to folders on my second HDD anyway so no backing up for me... (way too lazy.).

I don't think I'll be going for any. Because when It's first released, there are always bugs and problems like with Windows Vista. So I'll probably wait a few years until It's more stable to upgrade. =D

Vista was a panic release, they just released it for the sake of it. Panicked and rushed - it was crap rom the start! ;)
