View Full Version : Vista - Slow Start Up

I've recently had a new graphics card fitted and now my PC loads really slow. It takes about 3-4 minutes for the desktop to show. Anyone suggest what I could do? I've tried disabling some services/start up programs. It's fine when the desktop appears but before that, it has the black loading screen for ages. :S Thanks.

Do you have a disc in?
When I do it takes a hell of a lot longer to load up, but without it's fine :P

It's probably one of these weird situations where after a few days it begins to work. Either that, or whatever you installed with the graphics card is trying to start-up at start up.

Do you have a duo/quad processor? Most computers come with settings that only use 1 processor, wasting the other (one/three). You can split the load between the processors.
Is your IP static? Dynamic IPs take up a bit of your boot time.
If you have Norton, get rid of it.
How many fonts do you have? I learned from a computer course that all your installed fonts load during your boot time so if you have a lot of them, get rid of the ones you don't need.

You could upgrade to 7, make sure MSN isn't starting at startup, check anti-virus to make sure it's not scanning at startup.
Do a disk defrag and disk cleanup.

Yeah, I'll take a look thanks.

I'll try and split the processors. I don't have many fonts, just the ones that came with Vista and I don't have Norton. Thanks, I'll try the processors bit.

Would upgrading to 7 remove all my stuff from my PC?

Cool, I'll disable it. :)

Did you switch from an NVIDIA to ATI graphics card or vise versa?

run ccleaner

run ccleaner
I use that a lot and that doesn't help boost the start up time.

not if you choose upgrade.

not if you choose upgrade.
So if I choose upgrade, all my files and programs will still be on the system, but the OS will just be Windows 7?

It's probably a driver conflict then. I always recommend to people when switching graphics card brands they should start on a fresh install of Windows to prevent complications.

NVIDIA is ****, always slows down boot time

So even if I was to get Windows 7/format the PC, the start up would still be slow because of having a NVIDIA gfx card?

sorry, didnt word it correctly. I meant that nvidia takes longer to boot up than ati. nvidia has a bunch of problems with almost all the gfx cards anyways so i don't see why you bothered switching
Wayne

I switched because my old gfx card was onboard and had a very low amount of MB.

yeah, ati may not be the best in terms of performance but nvidia is a headache.

Geforce 8400GS.
Ive got the same GFX card. A few weeks ago i updated the drivers for it so it might be worth trying it yourself. http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us click Graphics Drivers, and it will scan your system and tell you the latest drivers you can download for your GFX card.
Hope i helped.

Guys, there is nothing wrong with his graphics drivers. I'm was just saying that there could be a clash between the old ones and new ones.
ATI nor NVIDIA boot up slower than eachother.

Upgrading your PC for many reasons may require upgrading various other components. Check how big your ram is, if its any less than 1.5gb than i suggest adding 1gb extra. The only reason for the slow bootup would be that the graphics card will have to process more things in better quality and it needs a higher ram to do so.

The graphics card has nothing to do with Vista booting up slowly.
