Ok I'm on Windows Vista on tuesday an automatic update was performed when I shut it down.. yestaday when I logged on there was like no sound at all. I Check my sound settngs so the speakers were definetly not muted... I then tried reinstalling sound drivers to no avail and then thought I'd go to the speaker properties and click 'test' and got the error 'No tone detected'

I soon discovered that when I try to play videos they also don't work and I get the error 'Windows Media Player could not play the file' as well as this Itunes didn't seem to like playing any sound or videos....

I searched google for an answer and found many possible solutions which included restarting system tools etc but have yet to find a solution that works.. at the moment all I have been able to do is 'roll back' my laptop to before the issue occured then my sound works perfectly fine... however as soon as I shut down an automatic update occurs and i have to roll back the laptop all over again...

I've come to a point now where I'm thinking of just buying a new laptop.... but would really appriciate it if someone could try and provide me with a solution so I can save my money... :8

I'll + rep anyone willing to help

Thanks!

I'd google the name of your speakers and put drivers in :)

See what it comes up with. Sounds like your missing the drivers, did the speakers come with a CD or are they built in?

Totally wrong, speakers do not need drivers. You will need to find out the model of your soundcard and get the drivers for that, or alternatively System Restore

Hi thanks guys,

I've tried doing the drives and I'm worried performing a system restore will only mean I'll download the update and the issue will reoccur :(

Also I don't want to sound like a right dumb ass but would the sound card stop videos from playing aswell?
