I'm currently with BT Homehub, (the older version)
it has been playing up recently, I use a laptop and wirless has stopped working. We phone up there customer service in like india and get charged like £1.80 an hour and she does the EXACT same as what we do.

Turn the router off, count to 10. Turn back on.
It works for around 10-20minutes the turns off. I'm currently using an ethernet cable to connect but anyway.

I want to change, any rec's n what I should go with? I was gonna go with talktalk but then a friend of mine said it was crap so I don't know lol.

Any ideas? please share.

(I don't know if this is the right section for this so if it's not a mod move it please lol)

I'd personally recommend Virgin Media. Try and get fibre optic if you're in the fibre optic area - don't check the website, ring them up (they haven't updated the site with areas).

The speeds are fast (I'm getting 9.85mb/10mb) and it's pretty good pricing.

Virgin Media I would think ;)

If you cannot get Fibre Optic with Virgin then I would go elsewhere, I hear a lot of bad stories about their ADSL service

You do realise it's your router's problem, not your ISP's? Just get a new router for £30

Try updating the router firmware

The HomeHub updates automatically during the night when a new firmware is released.

Don't care, he should still do a manual update and try resetting it.

You can't do a manual update on the HomeHub, what would be the point in that? All he could do is a factory reset.

My MacBook had this problem with our HomeHub 2.0, I turned off Wireless N on the HomeHub and then turned it back on again and it was fine.

My family are with TalkTalk, they're not that bad. It's actually quite quick. xD

If the firmware is damaged and it cannot auto download the firmware update properly

If the firmware was damaged the device would probably be bricked, the likelyhood of it corrupting the firmware peice that just so happen to control the downloading and installation of firmware is minimal.

In case you didn't notice, routers are basic computers. Computers do not need to 'brick' to have errors.

Routers will brick themselves if you throw a hair at it the wrong way, nearly all errors with routers lead to bricking everywhere.

And incase you didn't notice, an OS, for e.g. Windows, will throw a BSOD if it tries to write to some corrupt RAM.

This may/will sound so silly but I recently had a similar problem and it wasn't until I accidently knocked my router onto the floor and the ariel came off, that I realsied the ariel had been loose all along :P. So basically, (assuming your ariel is detachable like mine), make sure that it is screwed in completely. This sorted my problem and was great!

Although if you still end up switching ISPs, I also reccomend O2. I found them to be the cheapest so I signed up with them at my student house. Don't think I had any problems with them :).

The HomeHub does not have an external aerial.

Why do people think switching ISP is the solution? A freakin' £20 router may fix his problem if a hard reset doesn't!

Before even switching an ISP. Because that takes time and so on, just buy a new router. NetGear or some other brand. Then if you still have problems, then you can move ISP. Jeese!

Edit: I have had a similar problem tbh, where it would work for say 5 mins but cut out. Although we are on a cable service but it pretty runs the same, we went out and bought a new router and haven't had a problem since. Do that before you even think about moving ISP.

Why on earth would you BUY a router if your with BT? Phone them, tell them you have previously troubleshooted with another BT representative and nothings worked so you want a new home hub sent out and they will give you one for free. You might even get home hub 2.0.

If you wanna change then change, but if you stay with BT then just tell them you want a new homehub

No it isn't, its a router problem, not the ISPs, where the hell is the logic in that?

I never said it was bricked :/, it could be a simple incompatibility between the computer and the router, but this is in no way a reason to switch ISP.

Wait so it's producing an error much like not being able to contact the update servers for example

Tom he did ask for recommendations on a new ISP.

So that is a MASSIVE give away why people are recommending ISPs if he does move.

Yes but I can't get my head aroudn the fact that you would move ISP becuase your router doesn't work or is incompatible with your hardware. By moving ISP you're wasting time and money. Do a hard reset on the router, if that doesn't work, ring BT up, say the HomeHub has failed, they will ship a new one, if not then buy a new one, simple.
