View Full Version : iPhone 3G vs 3GS+rep

Hey everyone, i guess its time for me to jump on the iPhone ship.. I am only doing it because i need to upgrade my cap (to the next one, $49) and the iPhone cap has internet for the same price as the current $49 cap (same features but this one gets internet for free)..
So, is there a big big difference between 3g and 3gs?
I don't think i've ever used the video recorder but i know i will need one when i don't have it. So is there an app that lets you record videos for free?
I know the 3gs does video recording but there are no stocks in melbourne atm for my telco..+rep :)

Statistially the 3GS is 54% faster than the previous versions,
as not only does I have faster processors and faster RAM,
but a faster internet connection, even with them both runnng 3G Internet, as the 3GS has faster hardware aswell.
The 3GS has
- Video recordering
- Faster Internet and processing speeds
- Internet teathering
- Voice control
- A compass
- Longer battery life
These arnt the greatest reasons to go for a dearer model, as many if these features and fixes will be cnfronted with the 3G in the new sofware updates,
so it's really down to choice over price really
Hope this helps

If you jail break a regular 3g then you can get video recording working, however it is really slow

Is it easy to do? I mean, i can get a 3g now but the 3gs might not come for a few weeks :S

3G has internet tethering as well bub.
I have the iPhone 3GS and I really don't think its that great. I like the fact I can upload to youtube and stuff but meh - think if you have a video camera you don't need 3GS.

I would use the video recorder on my phone because i don't have a video camera (only a digital camera that can take videos)...
but still, is there a significant difference between the two apart from the speed and camera? would i be able to notice the speed difference?

so i should save the five bucks a month and go for the 3g (8gb) then!
I'd go with the 3gs, it will be much more future proof, especially if the length of the contract is long. http://www.engadget.com/2009/06/17/iphone-3g-s-review/ look on there and watch the speed comparison video, the 3gs is much much quicker in my eyes.

Go with the 3GS, it's a lot better than the 3G model otherwise they wouldn't have developed another iPhone. I bet future updates for 3GS are great too.

You lot are saps if you think the 3GS is any better.
i'd say its worth getting the 3Gs :)
I have both and tbh theres slight difference, the 3G internet speed is fast enough for anyone and I didn't need it any faster, I never use voice control cause you look like a idiot speaking to your phone and it takes longer to start up and shut down your iPhone.
I would of stuck with 3G but was had the chance to upgrade so I did. 3G just as good tbh
My brother has the 3G, but has just upgraded when he saw the speed of my iPhone 3GS compared to his.
They've upgraded the processor, to make the speeds a lot faster. It may not seem significant, but when more demanding apps are released, then you'll reap the benefits.

I would much rather drill my money into a 3G, as it just seems that the 3GS comes with to much bagage, and the extra features and speeds arnt really good enough, for me to want to dip that extra bit into my pocket,
althoght fair point, it's is more futureproof, but with bigger hardware and software, comes bgger problems and bugs :(
I would also like to note, that jailbreakng an iphne is a great way to mimic a 3GS capabiltiy, but if you were to break the iphne, it's done for good, cause if yu bring it to apple, you'll have your self a law suit, and they will take the phne from you :(
unless you bring it down some dodgey back alley to get fixed lol oj

You know nothing, they make these phones because they want money lol. Thats almost like Apple making one operating system and then done for the rest of their time. They make things to make them better, and as technology gets better so does the product.

Exactly. Apple just leave out basic features like copy paste, video recording etc. to make money in the future :/

For someone who supposedly works for apple you seem pretty incompetent at giving good information.
Your not going to achieve much greater speeds by Jail breaking, really the only thing you can expect to gain is the video camera, which is incredibly slow. Apple don't take you to court for jail breaking your iPhone, it just invalidates your warranty.
As well as this I wouldn't expect and apple employee to be reccomending jail breaking to other people.

WizSeriously what the hell are you on about? If he jailbroke his iPhone, all he'd have to do was restore it all via iTunes.
If the extra $5 isn't much to you then I'd recommend the 3GS. I have Cycorder (Video recording app (jailbroken)) for my iPhone, the quality isn't that good.
With the 3GS you have 4 processors instead of 2 which makes everything much faster. Internet speeds will improve and apps will load super fast.
The 3G is still an amazing model but lacks the speed of the 3GS.
Ask yourself a question. If your computers internet speed was slow, would you pay $5 to make it faster?

There isn't much speed difference, plus it takes longer to load and shut off.
The internet speed is more than fine and if you need it any faster then you are an inpatient ****, same with apps.
The voice control is pointless unless you like talking to your phone, compass you can get on 3G with app, same with video recording. So the only thing new is the 2x speed which I frankly don't give a **** about.

Yes there is speed difference. The 3GS caters for inpatient people, I agree. I would rather have my page load in 3-5 seconds rather than 10-12. Also, those big on the youtube experience will have their videos load faster. Another thing, you can upload straight to youtube from your iPhone.

The only reason why I would want a 3GS is for that extra bit of battery life, 32GB space, speed, video recording, and compass, (quite a big list when you look at it, but in the grand scheme of things, it's nothing that I cannot wait for) so apart from that I would rather wait another year for the next upgrade. :P

They mess up if you don't do it properly and download the wrong things. They should know if they are going to jailbreak it then they should make sure they get someone who's done it many times before or watch the video on YT many times. Also key by making a backup. If they don't do none of that then they deserve to have it messed up if they are wanting to jailbreak it.

Jailbreak your iPhone, and it will vod you warrenty, and yes in cases you can be taken to court! You editing the iphne software, disabling components and effectivley stealing money, from apple and developers! So tell me how that isn't illegal?
And to the guy who thinks that iTunes restore button for the iPhone will fix a cracked, smashed or loose screen you have another thing coming, and what about hardware damage, yano the physicall damage? Or damage to the screen?
I never realised iPhone restore also had a magic wand? Because it dosent! Restore does not fix everything!

So you are denying that you can be taken to court?
Jailbreaking is editng the iPhones software, which is in breach of they're terms and conditions, of which they do have the right remove the product from you, at which point you can recieve compensation,
and no, not all the cases are thrown out, I will find examples of news stories and link them back to you,
hacking software or decompilng coding is illegal, and particpating is soliciting to commit fraudand breaks many of the digital acts in place,
you are stealing money from apple and developers, which is ilegal..
I'm not saying you are the one making he softare, bt sure The Pirate Bay wernt the ones hostng the files..

Link the cases please. Also @ your previous post, where you mentioned that a restore would not fix a broken screen, its not at all what he was saying, you should probably read the posts the first time.
The only reason i have a problem with this is the fact you claimed to be an Apple employee yet its obvious your not, apple clearly wouldn't disallow the use of windows vista and fire their employees for it. Nor would they take users to court for jail breaking their iPhone, unless in certain cases where they are directly responsible for other users jailbreaking etc.

No, Jailbreaking it self is not stealing, and the users are not decompiling the code, it is the developers that release the jailbreak that are breaking the law, but as of yet none of them have been taken to court.
Apple tried to make it illegal to jailbreak the iPhone and iPod Touch, but the courts just threw their cases out. No matter how much Apple cry and try, it will not be illegal to jailbreak your phone. The principle is, "you paid for the device, you own the device, it is you're device to do as you please to.".
Apple have never taken a device from a customer because they have jailbroken it, this would be classed as stealing and Apple would be in the **** for it.
I think actually, you're talking out of your ass. An Apple employee would be mature enough to spell properly for a start.
Also "hacking" and decompiling code is not illegal, ever heard of open source?

WizLearn to read before posting. I said that an iTunes restore would restore the phone back to its original state (3.0).
Also, Apple can't take nobody to court over jailbreaking lol. Once I buy the phone from Apple, I can do what I want with it. Thats like Apple taking all application makers to court because they modify the software. All applications modify the software beyond what the iPhone originally has.

Do you have any idea how much of an absolute **** you sound? If you restore the software, APPLE DO NOT KNOW IT HAS BEEN JAILBROKEN. The software on the device is restored to the original.
The Electronic Frontier Foundation have asked that jailbreaking phones - such as the iPhone - be an exception to the DMCA where Apple have said that they want it to be not so much illegal, but not legal either. A fuzzy gray area.
On Topic - I would personally buy a 3GS, and since its only really $5 more surely you are better going with the slightly better model? :)

Well if it is "bugged", or in some way broken other than smashed screen or something, how will they ever know if it was jailbroken? And if the screen was smashed they would just hand it back to you.
Also, learn to use the correct vocabulary.
Definitions of "bugged" on the web:
having hidden electronic eavesdropping devices; "wired hotel rooms"; "even the car is bugged"
A covert listening device, more commonly known as a bug, is usually a combination of a miniature radio transmitter with a microphone. The use of bugs, called bugging, is a common technique in espionage and in police investigations.
