Updated at 3:50 p.m. EDT with new details on Sony's announcement.
Sony on Tuesday finally took the wraps off the much-rumored PS3 Slim and gave it the more affordable $299 price tag consumers have been clamoring for.
Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Kaz Hirai performed the unveiling at a press conference in Cologne, Germany, preceding the opening of the Gamescom Expo. He took the stage and announced the PS3 was "getting a new model" and that indeed it was called the PS3 Slim.

The Slim is hitting stores September 1 in North America and will cost $299 (or for those who live in other regions, 299 euros or 29,980 yen). Hirai says the device has the same features and functions as the "old" PS3 but is 33 percent smaller, 36 percent lighter, and comes with a 120GB hard drive.
Sony says that to achieve the new form factor, the internal design architecture of the new PS3 system has been completely redesigned--"from the main semiconductors and power supply unit to the cooling mechanism."
The PS3 slim is powered by a new 45nm version of the Cell processor, which runs at the same speed as the 60nm processor in the "old" PS3 but is smaller and more energy efficient. According to company reps, power consumption for the Slim also been cut to two-thirds, "helping to reduce fan noise," which is important.

On the cosmetic front, this model has a textured surface finish that gives the PS3 a fresh, "casual" look that the company hopes will make it more appealing to a wider audience (read: casual gamers). As previously rumored, the PS3 logo has undergone a redesign and Sony's changing the PS3 brand name from "PLAYSTATION 3" to "PlayStation 3" (we've actually been calling it the PlayStation 3 for a while).
Like the 80GB and 160GB models, the 120GB PS3 Slim has built-in Wi-Fi and two USB ports (sorry, Sony didn't add IR). You can also upgrade/replace the hard drive without voiding the warranty, though Sony has moved the hard drive from the side of the unit to the front for "easier access." (To remove the hard drive, you simply unscrew the screws). The one feature missing from the Slim is the ability to install another operating system (i.e., Linux)--Sony is doing away with that feature.
With earlier PS3s, you could prop your unit up vertically or lay it down horizontally. Out of the box, the Slim is only designed to be used in a horizontal position, but Sony will sell a $24 stand that allows you to stand it up vertically.
In making the move to the PS3 Slim, Sony will be upgrading the firmware to 3.0 and phasing out its legacy 80GB and 160GB models, selling them for $299 and $399 respectively.
John Koller, director of hardware marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America, says they've been able to run down inventory of older models, but he didn't have the best answer as to why someone would buy an old 80GB model over the new 120GB Slim. "Some people want a unit right away and they may like the look of the old unit," he said. "People will have their reasons for wanting one."

I'll have my obese one over the thin model anyday.

No I don't mean that when I'm choosing actual ladies.

sony have once again ripped off europe with it being $299, E299, and £249. Converting $ -> £, it should actually be nearer the 180 mark, proabably rounding off at £199.

in any case, not the best looking console but its cheaper, more memory, less power consumption, lighter and smaller. All the slim versions are in matte black afaik, as in, the ps2 slim was matte also, so it was expected.

Not exactly a rip off, the import costs are considerably more than say america

I don't like it lol I'll stick with my PS3 'chunky' it may be heavy but it still looks cool :)

well it is, its not a £50 more import cost, it would be considerably less then that actually. Less than the £20 from 180 to 200 infact, as they will ship say 1000 at a time, so spread the cost over 1000 consoles. europe have to pay an extra £50 which just isnt right..

i know i said its lighter but tbh, who picks up their console that regularly anyway lol

Is it made out of paper?

Anyways it seems the majoirty of people say it looks awful so Sony has f'ked themselves up. I'l definatly be sticking with my 80GB Phat.

They've given XBOX360 fans another to reason why the Xbox is better, that's what they've done.

I find the 360 ugly and goes with no style in existence. Alien motiv does nothing for me, especially when it doesn't match any televisions, cinema surround or basic things like TV stands :P

Matte black should never be used on a games console. Gloss is what gives that luxurious, modern feel to everything. The PS3 is usually something of a centre piece... Hopefully there are enough paperbags out there for the Slim to hide its head in :P

Not really, most 360 fanboys moaned about the size, the fingerprints, the cost and how heavy it was. So p0wned.

The cost is still considerably higher than the xbox, you have to buy a stand if you wish to stand it up

Please this is not to cause an argument, just 2 valid points

Im not a 360 fanboy, i was considering buying a slim but everybody was getting face on cos i already have a ps3, so i gettin a psp Go instead

The PS3 was the biggest disappointed of my life. The only positive experience I've had with it is since I got Little Big Planet a couple of days ago. I would have preferred this over the old one though - at least it's actually smaller than a PS2! :P

Is this backward-compatible (cba reading the essay)?

Tbh it might look ugly, but no matter how much of an Xbox fan you are, there is no point making youtube vids etc saying 'Xbox pwns PS3 SLIM, PS3 Slim is ugly'

I always thought 'its the inside that counts'

Which surely makes PS3 better ANY DAY.

Btw I do not currently own either of the machines - PS2 ftw xD

[...] Btw I do not currently own either of the machines - PS2 ftw xD

Exactly.

I was always a PlayStation fan boy and thought the old Xboxs looked ugly and that the controllers would be hell to use. Now I have a PS3 and a 360 so I know what they're like to live with.

For someone like me, a casual gamer (I hardly ever play games any more), my opinion is that the 360 is in fact better.

Some of the things that aggravate the hell out of me about the PS3 are the need to install games (which takes far too long), the need to update every five seconds, the trouble I had with the PS network on some games, the fact it's bigger than a bloody PS2, oh and for buying the nice big 80GB one, the thanks they give you is not making it backward compatible .

On the other hand, the 360 NEVER needs to install a game, it rarely needs to update (and when it does it's pretty fast). I love how you can play your music while playing a game and I find Xbox Live more reliable than the PSN. Oh and the 360 was a damn site cheaper of course. Funnily enough, I hate Halo though and love Killzone :P.

There's lots of other smaller details but I'd just sound picky if I start ranting about them.

I hate it when my mates who only have PS3s insist it is better because you can't make a complete judgement until you have lived with both consoles. I prove that by favouring the 360 after previously hating Xboxes.

I only wish the 360 had been out when I was younger, I see my brother playing online with his mates all using headsets and it looks like it would have been great fun.

I have both and i find ps3 alot better. The games are nicer for me and the menu is much easier for me to use and it looks generally nicer imo. I dont honestly care about the size xD. It got a better hardware so fans better. Neither my xbox or ps3 have broken. Well I have a broken ps3 but thats coz my brother muffed it up so it wasnt actual playing.

I dont find I need to install alot and not all games need installing? Either that or I havnt installed a game recently. The only game that really annoys me is mgs4, every chapter you need to install lol. But xbox has been much faster though.

I dont see the difference with onlines except I pay for one (lol).
