For me spotify is a lift saver. When ever I get a song into my head I search it and save it to my place list for free. Does anyone else use spotify?

Im not sure if it's illegal or not. Im guessing not as it gives you the option to buy the songs you listen to.

It isn't illegal.
They make their money and pay royalties in other ways

Its very legal and a shining example of where the music industry will eventually end up. Selling songs as a primary revenue stream is only going to keep them going for so long as piracy and all-you-can-eat services like Nokia's comes with music become more popular. Last night I had a party and used spotify and some surround sound speakers for the music with one of their day pass things that cuts the adverts out for a day. I looove it :D

Ah, so the day passes are good?

day pass means you can download songs from there for 24 hours.
downloading the free program means you can listen to all the songs on there for free

I know what they are, but is the experience of getting one good. (Pretty much everyone on the tech forum knows and uses spotify)

No the day pass allows you to stream music without adverts for 24 hours, not download anything. Bit of a waste of money unless you specifically want the music without adverts for 24 hours.

I have no use for it, if I want a song, I want it in my library. Therefore I'll always have a copy of it even if Spotify disappears one day and I can have it on my iPod, phone etc.

Yup I use it. The adverts don't really bother me that much. Got over 70 songs on my Random playlist I've been adding songs to for about 2 weeks :P.

And no it isn't illegal.

Is there anything like this that works world wide? Spotify, Hulu, Google Voice, none of that stuff works in Canada so to me it's all crap :(

www.last.fm (http://www.last.fm) has a fairly big variety of tracks to listen for free. However a few months ago they stopped this being worldwide. It's still free for UK, US and germany, not sure about Canada though.

Edit; http://www.thetechherald.com/article.php/200913/3315/Last-fm-only-free-for-those-in-US-UK-and-Germany

There's grooveshark.com which has an enormous amount of free tracks, however it is illegal seeing as it doesn't pay any royalties.

Yeah, damn all that free, legal streaming music, I want everything free!

It beats having to pirate every song you want some way or forking out louds for it.

Spotify is really great for listening to albums instead of just tracks like on youtube. Also, its much easier to search, but it doesn't work on my netbook, so I only get to use it on my mums computer.

It's useful for when my mates wanna show me some songs over MSN or when I'm using my laptop in a wifi enabled area without my music at the ready :p Love it tbh.

I use it, it's a great idea whoever's behind it. I don't really use my iPod much, mostly listen to music at the computer so it's great for me. The only annoying thing is the ads, but they can't be expected to do it without them I suppose.

I use it and it's certainly not illegal, it has all the labels on board.

Chippiewill
23-08-2009, 10:19 PM
And it has of yet to pay any royalties to the labels :)

My library is so big I have it on an external hard drive, so I use Spotify when I cbb to connect my external up. I've found it's not great with finding artists though. A lot of bands I've searched for only have tribute bands on there for some reason :S.
