Building a small server around mITX.

Motherboard + CPU: Gigabyte GC330UD (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-222-GI) £64.99
Case: Silverstone SG05B (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=CA-063-SV) £89.99
HDD: WD Green Caviar 1TB (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-246-WD) £57.99
RAM: Corsair 2GB DDR2-PC5300 (667MHz) (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/130432) £18.99

Obv. not on Jew Bear's scale but w/e, I also saw this cute little bundle (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=MB-033-IN) I might go for... not sure?

This thing needs to use as little power as possible rly.

Nice specs for a server. What are you hosting that needs 2GB of RAM and 2.33Ghz processor?

The intel atom should be fine if it's just a file server

What is it being used for?

And why not the Samsung F2? Low power consumption and still performs well http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-076-SA&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1279

Aye, was looking at the Samsung F2, Ill go for that instead then if other people are talking about it.

File server, media streaming, possibly some kind of hardware firewall etc, general server stuff under Ubuntu to play with.

I think the Atom is probably my best bet, low power, decent speed, small formfactor.

The quad bundle looked fairly nice for the price, I don't need it, but it'd be nice to have, I probably won't go for it though.

Yeah, you may as well go with the Atom.

The Samsung performs much better (almost as good as a standard 7200rpm drive) and uses a little less power during heavy I/O, but the WD uses about 1W less power at idle. Some benchmarks here and on the next few pages of the article. http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/2tb-hdd-energy,2371-8.html
