Apparently skype's closing due to the licencing with the founders of skype o.O

They have to pay a fee each year to the creators of some code that makes Skype generally 'work'. Without it Skype just wont do anything. Not too sure what the terms are though.

Basically a company bought Skype but not the patent for the technology that makes it work. Then they fired the CEO who holds the patent and now they look like idiots.

Nothing is too big or small to close down. Apple or Microsoft could go bankrupt or something and just close down.

How ignorant this may sound but companies like eBay, Google, Microsoft, you can add in Apple... will always have a comfortable future ahead of them... As technology develops, you may never know... these companies could be gone, unlikely though.

Big lost for google if they don't manage to keeping getting the code that they need to power skype.....

$2.5 Billion down the drain... ouch, it's pounds to ebay anyway.

I can't see it closing down tbh. They make a $1 billion turnover so they're not just going to go down easily. They've already began making their own code and I'm sure if they wanted to they could hurry up the efforts.

They'll probably just end up paying the license a huge amount of money or buying permanent rights to it.

What do Microsoft do with patients? I wasn't aware Microsoft employees were medically trained :P

From what I've read - It wont be for at least another year. The court case starts in June 2010.

Well we have a long time to still enjoy Skype. I don't see it going "fully", probably some agreement will come out anyway.
