View Full Version : Web host forum - No unlimited rule

I feel that a 'no unlimited' rule should be applied to the web hosting forum. Simply because it does not exist and never will. I feel that it is misleading and often hosts will have a 'fair use' policy limiting them to 40gb per month or similar.
I feel that a company should be allowed to advertise an 'unmetred' package as long as the company has a fair use allowance and clearly points it out.
All who agree say 'Aye!'

Aye!
Many hosts say unmetred for $5 a month, but at the end of the day that never has, and never will actually work.
owever a rule against it might not work, as what if the host really CAN offer it?

I think this would be a useful rule.

Web hosting talk enforce a very similar rule and it works.

It's a good rule, WHT have it and it 'protects the consumer'.

I'm currently with a company that offer unlimited bandwidth/space and honor the claim. i can litrally use as much bandwidth or space as i like with no restriction. The only restriction that is in place is server load, which by proxy does put limits on the other to factors - although the limitations up front. (unmeterd would be incorrect as useage is monitored, though simply for the users convenience.)
<when i original brought the hosting it was 4tb b/w (increased by 50gb a month) + 50gb space (increased by 5gb a month) so even then for a user like me practically unlimited>
The companies over a decade old, has excellent support and a pretty good price to boot.
The reason the hosting you get sucks isnt due to them offering unlimited plans, its because your going with new start up companies often owned by people with limited business and technical experience. Costs a little more to go with a bigger company, but imo its worth it :)

How much so you pay per month and what is your disc usage and monthly bandwidth?

Around $10 a month, http://dreamhost.com/unlimited.html explains their unlimited policy :)
ATM my usage is pretty minimal as my sites inactive for the most part, in the past ive pulled quite a lot more traffic. so still only double digit bandwidth (GB) :)

Could a member of management please look at this thread. Otherwise it's basically pointless posting it .

I'd rather know where the limit lay rather than hoping you're going to be within their resource policy. Also, if you're only using double figure bandwidth amounts you could get a much cheaper account.

cheap easily, reliable, no chance :) Connivance is something i'm happy to pay for.
Keep in mind all shared hosts impose the CPU limits, its just most don't specify them outside the small print of the TOS.

I know that none of management actually cares about the web host forum, however I am going to keep bumping this until I at least get a response from management.

Your response will probably be "stop bumping this thread" :P

Just read through the whole thread, management is very busy this time of year with school starting again and what not so bare with them, Nvr voted in your poll btw. I'll try and attract some attention of management. However, personally as a moderator I have enough to do in the other four sections as well as tech so I could do without what seems to be a pointless rule as everybody already knows it's not unlimited?

As Adam noted I've obviously been watching :P I thought the argument was playing out rather well with the users themselves so I figured I'd let the argument pan out and see what I thought once they were all made.
But since that just stopped short...I think that Mentor's point shows that its possible for unlimited hosting (in the hosting sense of the word anyway) and its just because the majority of users who post in that forum are inexperienced or young that there is frequently a problem.
I think that in general buyers have a responsibility to pay attention to their purposes and people will usually question those who claim to have "Unlimited" service (rather harshly sometimes :P) so I don't think there's necessity for a change.
As it was an option - No idea :D

It's not, Dreamhost will cut you off if you use too much of their resources, "unlimited hosting" never works and never has. There are always restrictions in the small print that allows them to cut you off if you go over the top with it.

Seconded, if you are uploading in a way that uses resources then your site can be suspended. There is a cap stopping you from reaching the Hard Drive limit which is simply resources used for upload and upload speed.
I'm all for un-metered which is really what Mentor has, they don't limit the hard drive space however they do limit the resources meaning, not unlimited.
If anything at least add a note in the 'Your responsibility thread' saying that unlimited is not real or similar.

There would be a buyer responsibility there to know what they're purchasing :P
