That other Goldfish advice thread just reminded me of when I was younger I had a pair of goldfish. Their tank was kept on a shelf fairly high up (next to the top cupboards) in our kitchen.
One day I remember I was with my parents in the kitchen and I think it was my mum suddenly noticed that one of the fish had vanished from the tank. Now the tank was just a normal rectangular glass tank, must have only been about 2ft x 1ft and had a light plastic lid that just lifted off (no hinge or anything).
There was no trace of the missing fish at all and the two main conclusions we came to were either that the remaining fish ate the other or that the back door had been open and a cat had came in and taken it. However neither of these theories are really likely; a) because the two fish were exactly the same size (about two and a half inches long) and b) the tank was pretty out of reach, the lid had not been removed and there was no splashed water around the area.
If this was someone else telling this story, admittedly I'd probably be inclined to think the fish just died and their parents took it away without telling them. But I 100% categorically state that this was not the case. My parents weren't like that. For example, my dad didn't like to let me believe in Santa to save the disappointment when I found out he wasn't real :P. I'm 19 now and my dad's dead so my mum would have obviously just told me by now but even when I was that age, they would have just told me anyway.
Besides, I got the fish for my fourth birthday, both fully grown. This happened when I was about 8 or 9 but the second fish lived on, even after it was moved to a pond, and was still alive by the time I was about 10 or 11 when we eventually moved out of that house. So why would one fish have another good few years left to live while the other just died?
This is something that's always been at back of my mind really and I seem to recall hearing of similar stories so I just thought I may as well give it a stab and see if anyone's had similar experiences.
Cheers
