BIG Brother was hours from being pulled OFF AIR after series five's infamous fight night, TV Biz can reveal.
Police wanted to quiz all the housemates under caution following Victor Ebuwa and Emma Greenwood's furious bust-up in 2004.
In some of the show's most shocking scenes, Victor, 28, and Emma, 25, threatened to KILL each other after a row.
Victor spat in her face during ugly scenes that saw viewers call police.
Borehamwood cops said they wanted to ship the wannabes out to the Hertfordshire station in blacked-out vans the morning after the fight.
The head of show producer Endemol went to the studio prepared to announce that the plug had been pulled.
Bosses pleaded with police for understanding, claiming that carting the housemates away would finish off the show.
They also argued the contestants might think the cops' involvement was a TASK.
An insider revealed: "There was no way we could have carried on if everyone was in cutody for several hours. We all thought it was curtains.
"Fortunately the cops saw sense and decided to wait until the housemates came out."
The full saga is set to be revealed in a new book from show chief Phil Edgar-Jones.
