Basically I have all my music dumped in the 'my music' folder and I want to sort it into folders. Is there any way to do this without wmp saying 'windows media player cannot find this file'. I can always click 'browse for this item' but im not doing that for every single song
Just delete your library, sort the files then re-add everything at once.

My WMP tracks the movement of songs, so if i move them the location will be automatically updated (Y)

Mine does too :S Surely this feature can be turned on? The only thing it sometimes doesn't do is pick up a new album, but that's easy to add.

I have this problem with iTunes, because I don't use WMP, but in iTunes I just delete everything then drag it all back in.

In iTunes you can get everything organised very well like this:
Go Edit -> Preferences.
Go to the right tab (the one most right) - (geavanceerd in Dutch).
Select a Location of iTunes music file (e.g. D:/My Document/My Music/iTunes Music).
Tick the things underneath those (edit map iTunes & duplicate files to iTunes music).
And then you go File -> Library -> Collect Libary (or something like that).
Then it'll copy all files into right folders, so like: Lady GaGa -> The Fame -> Just Dance. So it goes Artist -> Album -> Song.
I hope you understand it otherwise just PM and I'll explain or improve this explanation!

I have WMP 9 because I don't like the newer styles (and it asks for genuine Windows..) and even that old one tracks moving songs about

Oh, I'm sorry but you asked for WMP, didn't realize.
Well, if you want to order it you can just add them all to itunes and let it be copied in the folders.
