Well atm, im using a wireless router to connect to my computer and 2 other laptops. Now we wanna change so that its purely wired. We've got the cables and the switch thing so that we can connect all the cables to the modem. We've connected it all and what not. However my problem arises in the fact that once all the cables are connected, i can only get 1 connection at a time working.

Eg.
Ive got the connection to my pc, but not the other laptops
then i fiddle around, and ive got the connection to my mum's laptop, but not to my pc or the other laptop.

Ive turned on connection sharing and im just so baffled.

May I just ask why in the hell you would choose wired over a router? :P

You have a wireless router already, correct?

Correct! And the problem occurs with and without the wireless connected (by wires).

How did you previously have it setup? Did you have the telephone line connected to the wireless router direct or did you use a seperate modem?

If you just used a seperate modem then a switch won't be able to support more than one connection to the internet because it only switches packets. You need a router (to perform NAT) to allow multiple connections to share the same internet connection - you can get normal wired routers.

I had the telephone line connected to the modem which was connected to the wireless router which was connected to my PC (and then was wireless for the 2 laptops).

So i need to swap what with what in my current setup?

Nothing just disable the wireless on the wireless router and you have a wired router assuming it has ethernet ports.

Do you have a switch or a hub? If you're using a switch make sure the modem isn't plugged in to the "uplink port" or one of the end ports if it isn't labeled as uplink or equivalent.

You know you could just use your current setup and plug the ethernet cables into the router and disable the wireless feature.

You sure? It sounds like the sort of problem you get from things not being in the right port.

Well re-looking at the switch, on the back it has labelled all the ports but they're just labelled LAN 1-8.

Try the modem plugged in a socket other than 1 or 8. If it doesn't work then I don't know, sorry.
