TWO boys were today cleared of plotting a Columbine-style massacre at their school.

Matthew Swift, 18, and Ross McKnight, 16, were facing possible life sentences for the alleged plan to murder teachers and pupils in a killing spree at Audenshaw High School, Greater Manchester.
But after deliberating for just 45 minutes the jury at Manchester Crown Court rejected prosecution claims the teenagers had become obsessed with Columbine killers Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold, who murdered 12 students and a teacher and then killed themselves at their high school in Colorado in 1999.

I find this absolutely appaling, how the hell could they get cleared after being accused (with evidence) of doing such a thing?

Crazy world.

On what basis were they cleared? :S They found plans that they were going to do it and everything ?

How shocking.

News tonight: Massacre at Audenshaw High School leaves 50 dead!

But the defence told the jury the journals were merely the teenage scribblings of two youngsters with over-active imaginations. Over-active my fat ass?

It's amazing right?

Over imaginative minds? 16 and 18!!!!! They're old enough to go and get jobs, one of them is old enough to leave home and fend for himself!

I just don't get it.

I hope someone ties them to a post in the ground and surrounds them with hundreds of fireworks, then the next time one of them breathes, it triggers a switch which sets off the fireworks, blowing them into space and smithereens

:']Awful, just awful.

Seems just like a fantasy to me to be honest, what a waste of money. They weren't found in possession of any firearms or offensive weapons so I don't think there's any real grounds to convict them.

Fantasising about doing something like this is different to actually doing it. Instead I'd probably detain them under the mental health act indefinitely and see where it goes from there.

I think it's right that they were cleared. In my own opinion they were too over imaginative teenagers. It's easy to think "OMG TERRORISTS" or whatever but that isn't really the case. There is no evidence to suggest they were genuinely going to carry out such attacks. Yes, they wrote and imagined it but they didn't even have any weapons, it was merely a fantasy that most people would oppress - these two however didn't close such thoughts and embraced them in a way which landed them in trouble.

wouldn't have seemed a very safe conviction if you'd asked me.

I'd lock them both up in a mental hospital and then in a few years time a doctor/doctors can make an assessment on whether or not they are right to re-enter normal life.

'But the defence told the jury the journals were merely the teenage scribblings of two youngsters an adult and someone else old enough to legally get a driving license and have sex, with over-active imaginations.'

Although a life sentence would have been harsh when you see murderers etc only getting a few years.

What difference does it make if he is old enough to have sex?

It is just an example of something the law recognises as a subject of enough responsibility to only allow those of at least that age. Yet the same law dismisses such people's thoughts as 'just teenagers with over-active imaginations'.

If there are no fire-arms, then there's no reason to convict them :/ Actually commiting the crime and being caught with the instruments and tools to carry out the imaginations cravings are entirely different things to thinking them up in the first place. I could imagine Obama being gang raped in the White House by Alien and Predator then getting shot repeatedly, doesn't mean I'd find the time to call those two up and arrange it, or carry it out :P

It's disturbing, but no grounds to convict them... It's like me saying I want to give the Queen a good seeing to ;) If anything, they should of been given very minor counscelling(sp?).
