View Full Version : Windows 7 for £30 in the UK

Thats right, Microsoft have only released Windows 7 from the 1st October onwards, obviously you'll be able to preorder as retail release is on the 22nd October. Its $30 in the US, and £30 here, but heres the catch:
YOU HAVE TO BE A STUDENT.
You must have an email which is linked to a College or University, an .edu, .ac.uk or any other university emails, although I think these are the main ones. For the announcement click on this link. (http://www.microsoft.com/uk/windows/studentoffer/default.aspx) You can buy either the Microsoft Windows 7 Home Premium or Professional versions, worth at least £200 on retail.
You also have to be running a genuine version of Windows Vista or XP... Which aint that bad. The offer ends on January 3rd 2010.
The american website for the offer can be seen here. (http://www.win741.com/)
That seriously is not a bad offer for anybody, I dunno if they'll take exception to people with .sch.uk emails, but it seems the ac.uk would be accepted. I won't claim on this just because I get professional for free, but for those who dont have MSDNAA at their Uni/College, that's pretty epic of a saving.

Thats good, I paid for vista hp so I get 7 hp. Good for students though, encouraging them to buy.
Will probs be taking advantage of this. It's not an upgrade disk is it?

According to another website:
Microsoft today announced students would be able to purchase upgrade versions of Windows 7 for a significantly reduced price until January 3, 2010 at 12:00am CST.
So sounds like its an upgrade version only. It's a shame I don't have a college email address :/

What sort of email do you have?
and yeah it probably is an upgrade disc, but that'll be why it requires an XP or Vista installation already. For the price, it isnt that bad, at all...

For £30 it is the download. (2.2 GB)

My gut instinct would say no (vast majority of college or university email addresses are .ac.uk – not .sch or .org), but I guess we don't know for sure until full details go up on 1st October.

Wait until the details are available next Thursday, I gather. I can't imagine Microsoft denying too many students this discount – after all, £30 is better than the nothing they would get from a pirate copy.

You must be a total tight-arse if you think £30 is too extravagant.
I snapped up Snow Leopard, and I'll snap this up as well – I have XP installed (not Vista), so it's a fairly significant upgrade for my Windows partition.
Sound's like a good offer

Hmm, I currently have XP installed on one partition, and 80gb unallocated space on the other (cause I'm waiting for Win7) - but it's the version, so would I have to install XP on that partition too, use my legit key, and then upgrade Win7 through that? is it even possible to dual boot XP with XP?

Unless future information reads differently, it seems you will have to install XP and then upgrade, yeah.
I also see no reason why you can't have two installations of XP on different partitions.

The US site says it is a download, or you pay extra for a disk. I see no reason why we will be any different. The large file size is not really a consideration for people using a further/higher education network – fast download speeds.

I never disagreed? I just said the choice maybe there like it was with the Microsoft Office 07 Ultimate edition they did with the Ultimate Steal not so long ago. And I think it is right in saying that a large download may not be to everyones cup of tea :P
And you so just shown off your fast speeds, evil :P
I have an ac.uk email from manchester so I could get the £30 thing, but I don't think I could get the MSDNAA access.
Also, we're limited to 10Mbps download and 2Mbps upload, so not massively fast download speeds. However, the latency is epically low so web browsing feels really fast.

Might be. It's interesting how computers with the same specs may churn out different outcomes - like one computer has the same spec as the other, just different manufacturers. It's very odd. Hopefully Windows 7 will solve this diverse range of issues. Speaking of which, would this effect The Sims 3?
Most computer problems lie between keyboard and chair tbh.
I don;t know how the reinstallation/reformat thing will work as it's an upgrade disc anyway.
Any computer running Vista that is upgraded to 7 will run faster/better. Shouldn't effect things like The Sims 3.
