View Full Version : [TV] Derren Brown - How To Control The Nation
-Heart

Anybody else going to watch it?
It's tonight at 9 on Channel 4. It probably won't work, but it'll be interesting.
For anyone who doesn't know what it is, basically Derren Brown is going to attempt to stick the nation to their seats by watching some sort of video. More information here: http://derrenbrown.channel4.com/derren-brown-the-events-control.shtml.

This had made me all excited. Should be a good laugh. :)
I don't think he's gonna do it to be honest, if he just did it without mention then it could work but now peoples brains are prepared for it and know he's going to try it so it probably wont work, would be sweet if it did though.

Im looking forward to it, I hope it works, but I doubt it will :P
Probably one of those things that happens just because someone is telling you it will happen, so you fool yourself into thinking you are 'stuck' to your seat
It Looks So Interesting, we should all post the results like if he did control you or not 8)

I'm sure they have a disclaimer somewhere if it is meant to work, if you take part then it's at your own risk sort of thing, so you can't sue him for making you stick to the sofa because you willingly decided to take part.

There have been subliminal messages throughout the entire show. It's all nonsense. Subliminal messaging does work, but not in cases such as making you "stick to your seat". This is a placebo effect, by putting your mind to a belief, and it can work with ANYTHING. The subliminal messaging is a gimmick, like last week.

which is exactly what he said. He said it wont work if youre not open minded. Maybe you should stop being so opinionated and orcing everyone else to think what youre thinking. Seriously, every thread ive seen you in, mainly films obviously..

right people who are mornging about people saying fail etc here are the facts he used

Oldest trick in the book, ever done the push your arm against something for a minute then let go and it floats up.
I hate the ******* fact that stupid people watch this and he makes millions. Anybody can do what he does.
So yeah it's possible like everything else he does, they know what the mind and body does when reacting to these things. It's your automatic and involuntary action.

there were two subliminal image flashes - one of a man in a recliner at the start of the clip and one at the end - which was the man in the wheelchair.
i felt quite heavy but could stand up, i just think the position you're sitting in and the fact you're made to completely relax made you feel weak

See, gullable people fall for this stuff. It isn't magic or tricks.
I watched it, if you google it, its an illusion and has been performed more times than you've blinked. It's your mind and physics, it does things when things happen. Simple not confusing at all.
Staring at something tricks your mind into different states, also being told things that you want to believe takes control and what you think doesn't control you. Youtube illusions and see what happens.

Thing that baffles me if it was serious enought that you couldnt move for about 3 minutes, are they allowed to air it? Peopl could have panick attacks etc, in the studio if they were truley stuck then they had him there and everything, people living on their own that could be very dangerous?

I'm actually not gullible, but I'm open to things, unlike you, it didn't work on me, but he says himself it wont work for everyone and the fact it might not work due to your surroundings, a lot of people on this forum already said themselves it makes them heavy, what he did had an effect, it just wasn't a full effect, you are not as smart as you seem to think you are, you're not some sort of "big special" kid that thinks you can put words in peoples mouths, go sit down and be quiet because I don't really care what you have to say because a closed mind is the mind of a fool. :)

He doesn't say it's magic once? I didnt get stuck to my seat, but my body felt really heavy, and I felt kind of dizzy. If I casually tried to get up, I couldnt, but that always happens when you're relaxed enough.
When I really tried to push myself up, I could quite easily. Whereas there were some people in the studio with Derren that couldnt get up at all, even when pushing really hard :/ Weird.
It worked to a degree, but it didnt stop me from getting up :P
Then, Mr. kk, you're obviously foolish and naive if you don't know that it's a placebo effect, which requires no Derren Brown, and works with anything in the entire world.
Exactly, he just messes with your mind, give me a camera broadcast and i'll do the same easily.
@Neil: The fact at his lottery trick, millions of gullable people thought he actually predicted it, he made millions off that and what we got back was nothing, it wasn't even entertainment. He himself, lost a lot of fans because of that stupid stunt. I didn't see David Copperfield trying to get the limelight and make tons of money. David Copperfield is much better than Derren Brown, where as Derren Brown is seeking money.

Thats not what i was saying.. I was on about how you seem to enter threads that interest you, give your opinion, and anyone that disagrees will get a bashing with words from you. Lets see, you were bias in the inglorious thread because lets see, isnt this the film that you worked on? With tarentino? Hm, you ripped district 9 because it was being rated 9 on IMDB because you thought it was bad. Have you ever thought that people dont really give a crap what critics say and they judge for themselves? Because D9 was actually a great film, according to real people

Edit: I ain't jealous at all, lmao. I have had this chair thing done to me before, I've looked at illusions online and youtube and they work. But he doesn't deserve to get away with tricking people to believe he's doing it for real. Reason why Channel 4 got a bollocking from its viewers :)

Give me a bloody Channel 4 broadcast a camera, split screen and I'll ******* predict the lottery for the next million years. I'll also make you get stuck to your chair and pick whatever card you bloody want.
Out of all the people, Derren Brown makes millions from nothing. His ******** lies are just idiotic. (Oh stamp on this cup, and this cup, and this cup, these numbers are the lottery...)
Its called illusions.
Go watch on 4oD all of his shows, including the gathering. Also he might aswell tell everyone how he does it, cause more and more people are getting angry at his lies.
To be honest I've never seen anyone get angry, it's entertainment, who cares, if you're so smart why don't you go to BBC and ask for a contract, I'm sure if you're as good as Derren you'll outshine him and earn more.

seems like your just jealous he's earning his living from something that he's good at, the real hustle use illegal cons to earn their living, that's lies and deception and you don't cry about that, just get over it it's kinda sad you're getting all worked up because of the way he makes money.

I'm not joining this debate but Derren Brown always reinforces that he plays with your mind. Suggestion, psychology, showmanship and misdirection.
Camera trickery and lies or not. People still watch him and enjoy his show. He is far more skilled than you and that's why he can get away with things like this. I see no point in getting wound up. It won't do anything.

You're saying that because your argument is falling apart. So you think Derren Brown somehow stages all of his live shows using camera trickery? Because that doesn't make sense.

Exactly, clearly this guy has no idea what psychology is, which is what Derren kinda uses in just about everything he does.

Derren gets taught everything. He doesn't figure it out himself although you never hear from the people who actually teach him. I know that one guy's called Colin. He looks like the chubby one from McFly.
I think it would be nice to see from the people who do teach him but Derren has something special about him that makes him fit the part. :)

Because D9 was actually a great film, according to real people
Just so everyone knows, that image was the same throughout the show
Actually, if you read, I thought District 9 was a great film. And my opinion of Inglourious *******s is totally unbiased, and D9 does indeed pale in comparison. I make movies for a living and I critique them for a living. You can't get much more real than a professional with an encylopaedic knowledge of film. So there you go, chap.

If you're referring to the video that 'cuts' back. You do know that that was used to switch from pre-recorded to live. The bit before they switch to camera 2 is re-recorded, then they switch to re-recorded footage of camera 2, then switch back to camera one but it's now live. Or that's what all the evidence suggests. I thought everyone had figured out the shaking was a digital feature added after recording anyway?
Ahh, it wasn't the cut back video. But yes, I thought it was digitally added in, the shake, as not to make the split screen any harder? Why does it matter anyway, we all know he DIDN'T predict the lottery and it was more of a fact of getting the numbers on the balls, not predicting the numbers.

youre not getting what were saying. I was saying that have you ever tried to hold a camera whilst filming, A small one, as said, is hard enough. The whole point was that it was 'meant to be' handheld which obviously it wasnt, but thats not what i was saying

I didn't understand half of that but I know this was the camera that broadcasted live on my television when Channel 4 said it would. I've never seen a camera move in such a square shaped way in my life that it was unbelieveable.
If it was a feature, what a odd reason to add it in for then?

I dont know how you can say its completely unbiased if you worked on it. Seriously. If I'd worked on something id be doing my best to promote it, similar to when im designing.. Professionals dont tend to be the best critics, if you havnt noticed. Theyll nit pick through anything, film, tv, art, game, and point out all the bad points, tending to completely miss the good. Reviews from real people tend to be the most reliable, as they are real people. They think about things the same as most and so know what people like.

Film critics wh only critique are failed film-makers - the top ones anyway - I just was given the opportunity to do both. I am a fan of films before I am a film-maker and critic, so I give real opinions. I don't give films hard times unless they truly deserve it, which is why I support independent films and pick out the good of generally bad films. Inglourious *******s didn't need my help promoting it, it's dominated the box office. I worked on it, got paid, got my premiere invite and I'm done. It's business. If the film sucked I would have said so, but it happened to be phenomenal. Naturally I'm going to be biased about the films I'm producing in order to support them because I have a major role, whereas on IB, I was just a PA.
The problem is with all the movement trying to make it split screen while live would be an exceptionally hard task, the videos on youtube prove nothing, I can make 2 videos and split screen them in sony vegas or FCP without hassle but doing it to such a shaky live feed I can't imagine being such a "cake walk".
Obviously he didn't predict the balls, it's impossible but I can't see split-screen being the way he did it as it's not the sort of thing you'd expect "two camera men and Derren" to do while live on their own with all the shaking.
Who know.

Lol if you got stuck is because you wanted to, he didn't make you. He made you believe so much that he could that you told yourself so much and you made yourself stick to your chair.
It's all the mind and him telling you over and over put you in belief that he could actually stick you to your chair, whereas you aren't really because you've told yourself to believe that you are.

there were two subliminal image flashes - one of a man in a recliner at the start of the clip and one at the end - which was the man in the wheelchair.
i felt quite heavy but could stand up, i just think the position you're sitting in and the fact you're made to completely relax made you feel weak
I watched it on +1 and it no longer seemed like a wheelchair, more like a man who was tied to the chair, around the ribs and legs.

yeahh my mistake :P was convinced he was in a wheelchair - ie, being unable to get out of the chair. but being tied to a chair works too :P

The thing is it didn't fail though? A small number of people were stuck.
I don't know anyone who was stuck. The people on TV who were allegedly stuck could easily have been actors. He says actors and stooges aren't used but also in interviews he has said he's not opposed to lie to reach a given outcome. Also just by having some people in the studio be unaffected he's able to convince everyone else watching that they were just too strong-willed to be affected.
I personally hope there's a bigger picture because all of these have been a bit of a let down.

Has anyone suggested that it might have just not worked over the airwaves as well as he thought it would? If he had such a success rate in the studio (providing he didn't use actors as he claims) where they have an advanced sound system and a jockoff screen, maybe he didn't try it with a normal TV with built in speakers and stuff.
Idk I like to defend him because he's such a good showman and that makes up for some of his simpler tricks and non-events but its getting much harder these days :P
wow, i hate it when people were like, 'derren brown faked the lottery scam, i hate him.. but i'll watch the next one to voice my opinions against said trick just to get myself noticed'
it's the same with many tv programmes, how people watch say, top gear for example, just to complain about petty things.
personally, with derren brown, whether his performances are fake or not, i think they're executed well and provide somewhat good entertainment value and i will continue to watch his programmes. if you don't like his stuff, don't watch it?
anyway, I got stuck, but only for a couple of seconds and then I was able to get up.. still felt quite heavy but it was quite wierd. I watched it with 2 other people, one of which it didn't work on and another who was stuck for a good 3 minutes. I wish I got stuck longer but it's sky+'d so I'll watch it again and see what happens.

It didn't affect me or any of my family for that matter, a large handful of friends were affected though.
