http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1215442/I-cut-Trident-Brown-tell-UN.html

Former Labour defence secretary John Hutton has today attacked the Government's plan to scrap one of its Trident submarines and warned it was crucial that the UK retains its nuclear deterrent. The MP for Barrow and Furness, where concepts for the replacement submarines are being worked on, warned the UK could 'rue the day' if it opted to disarm completely.

His comments came ahead of Gordon Brown's planned announcement to the United Nations tomorrow that he has decided to axe one of the UK's four Trident submarines. Mr Hutton said although the world had changed since the Cold War, it was impossible to predict what the dangers would be in 20 or 30 years' time.

Does this man think we are stupid, hes got no money left because hes spent it all; thats why he wants to cut our nuclear fleet which ensures out safety and place in the world. If he thinks the Russia, China or Israel will cut their nuclear arsenals then hes off his rocker. This is the man who also refused to give the military money for Afganhistan and Iraq, which as was shown and still is today, troops have and are dying because they dont have the correct equipment.

Oh and.. "I don't do celebrity."

fantastic news, we're cutting a system which is used for bragging instead of action. If Nuclear weapons are used than we're all doomed on the planet anyway, fallout and that so who cares?

Bad idea this is. We need Trident, I know people think we don't but we actually do. If people think all the world is going to be "nuclear-weapon free" then they need to keep dreaming.

well done gordon, you really are ******* this country up now... lets be thankful he's only cut trident down by 1 sub, least we still have 3.

whatever happened to those 2 huge aircraft carriers that we were going to be building, and those 8 'type 45 destroyers' which we later reduced to only 6/7? didn't he/labour delay/cut those ASWELL? this man and labour are idiots, labour are pathetic, once upon a time the UK had the best armed forces, one of the best air forces, and the best navy, sadly the latter has now gone, and is still weakening because of this mad man (and past mad men) spending money on everything and not being able to afford what our country & troops actually need.

i used to support him, but now he's making me blood boil. :@

we know who to blame if the uk ever gets blown off the map, ah gordon brown! pfft, as if we had much of a nuclear deterrent anyway... now we have less. so angry.

tell you what gordon, pull our troops out of that death zone, afghanistan, save the money, and actually buy things that will benefit of our country, and defend our country, and whilst your at it, give the middle finger to the EU and stop them from robbing us of £40million a day, arse hole, and spend it on other things, like our UNDER FUNDED NHS and Education system, and how about you cut the £100billions worth of benefits that we the tax payer pay every year and spend those on other things that the good people in this country WANT? i.e. better transport, and infrastructure, and maybe someone to get kids off the streets at nights, and to stop them causing trouble????

TheWolf for Prime Minister! :)

The only thing I would disagree on would be Education and the National Health Service, I think they are overfunded in some ways, although if we didn't waste billions on the European Union, foreign aid and so on then we'd have enough money for the NHS, Education, military and probably still be left with a surplus at the end!.

That is true, I disagree on the foreign aid, as giving is good, but spending £40million of our TAX on the EU and 1/6th of our annual TAX on benefits is ******* disgusting, if I were PM, benefits would be cut dramatically, roll on March!

Stefan for PM.

I agree, giving is good.. however, say you give 1/3 of your wages to charity, well if your family is starving you dont leave them to starve and give 1/3 to charity no matter what do you?. It is the same with the country, the country can only give what it can afford, which is nothing at the moment.

The Conservatives have to be radical or they will be a failure, and some of the messages i'm getting from the Conservatives such as attempting to join with the Liberal Democrats are not good signs at all, not the signs of a radical government anyway.

United Kingdom comes first, and always should do.

That's true, giving is good but only what we can afford, I don't think Labour would be as bad If they had a decent leader, and we all thought Tony Blair was bad... look at this idiot we've got, oh how we miss you Blair! - never ever thought I'd say that.

The only difference between Tony Blair and Gordon Brown was that Blair had the slick factor which ment he could get away with a lot of things and worm his way out of questions and issues, but don't worry he'll be back fairly soon as President of the EUSSR, funded by our taxes to fund his million pound property empire while lording it over the whole of Europe (totally unelected I might add) telling us what light bulbs we can and cannot use!.

Although I agree with what's being said about Labour, in terms of Defence, the Tories seem to be far worse.

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/uk/article6836192.ece

They suggested scrapping one submarine, they're also suggesting scrapping the two aircraft carriers, the Airbus A400M (military transporter) and the Eurofighter Typhoons. All in all, they play an enormous part in our armed forces.

You already know my view on that. People don't understand that we need the new equipment to keep our Navy, Air Force and Army to top standard in case of any threats. We need the two need aircraft carriers due to the old ones we are currently using are over 40 years old! Typhoon to replace any ageing fighter jets aka Tornado. F-35 to replace the very old Harrier. A400 to replace the old C-130s. It all makes sense but they still want to cut it <_<. Stupid people to be honest.

Edit: The Type 45 destroyer's look pretty amazing tbh.

The F-35 and Typhoon/Euro fighter or amazing, we should still keep some harriers though imo.

And yeah, the type 45 destroyers are amazing, the fastest ship (in terms of power to weight ratio) in the world, I think, read it somewhere! and it's also meant to be ultra quiet.

I'd guess that is the case, mainly because many people only care about things such as their pensions nowadays, considering that Gordon spent them all from 1997 onwards.
