Dubbed or Subbed?
Dubbed for me, just because I prefer listening to English not Jap/Chi - I understand it more.
Firstly, Japanese or Jp. Jap is seen as offensive just like saying the 4 letter word for a pakistani. And also its just japanese not chinese. that would be a chinese dub.
I dont mind both aslong as its done by a decent company such as Funimation, But i will always watch the show in Jp before the dub. i only watch dubs if i get the dvd it gives me a reason to watch them again providing there good.
i dont wanna spend time writing an essay. ill just see what chris says. xD
Just a few points tho.
- Subs are the orgional, So ill watch it the way it was intended.
- Dub only people have to wait longer and also have less of a selection of anime to choose from since only certain series ever get picked up.
- Edited scenes or scenes cut out complely
- Bad voice acting, Like terrible or the voices dont even match the character.
- Poorly done just to get as much money asap, and sometimes releasing Dub only dvds.
- Violence is Sometimes cut or cut down a little.
- The actual voice acting and the way it is presented can be terrible.Such as emotional scenes and the character sounds the same no changes ( Naruto )
- Remove the background music and replace with crappy inhouse music
All i can think off. Like i said i like dubs aswell. i just hate Dub only watchers. Funimation and Adv and Geneon all did well witht here dubs and how they presented there dvds. (Uncut only dvds) where as 4kids just ruin shows and are racist. 4kids is up for sale anyway so ha.
Only a naruto comparison vid on youtube
"The Japanese voice actors aren't as enthusiastic as the English voice actors.
It makes no sense why most people say jap dubs > eng dubs. "

Purdy much.
Subs for me, the only dubbed series I have watched is Welcome To The NHK (First 10 Episodes) and DBZ
I'll watch a series dubbed if it isn't an awful dub and the dub has been completed, otherwise sub. (Bleach is horrible dub I think). I may watch most series dubbed, however I can respect that in most cases, the sub has better voice acting.

Obviously you understand it better in English because you're not Japanese
nor am I yet I still find it much more effective to watch it subbed, not so hard to read a few subtitles, the whole "I wanna listen and look at other things so i'll listen to it in English" argument is pretty **** because you should be wathing it to get the whole entertainment. whatever. subs > dubs but i'm not gonna hold it against anyone that thinks differently...

Subs for me, the only dubbed series I have watched is Welcome To The NHK (First 10 Episodes) and DBZSame, except not HK, but i have seen FMA and that was a bloody brilliant dub.

lol because its true i hate dub only people. they always use the crappy reasons. and then you have the really bad ones what will argue that the dub is better than the sub for example dbz. "Goku screams like a girl" =/ i thik Goku's Jp voice is awesome.. but i like the dub aswell.
just grrr lol.

I like dubbed, but I prefer watching the subbed, I find that if you're watching subbed and you have to read the subtitles, it means you concentrate more on the anime :P.

thats a rubbish excuse tho and i cant speak for other people but i can easily read and watch at the same time, and it takes me like a second to read the line of text.
+ If its a series that you watch all the time then you should know what the characters say and what moves they use etc. i was watching a Raw of OP and got mayb about 50% of it correct. So yeah.
and the other excuse people use. "im wanting to do other stuff while i watch it" if your doing other stuff then your not watching it then ;) most people have big monitors now adays. can easily split the screen. and most people stream now anyway the box is tiny >.> well it is for me. i have a 22" and crunchyroll/youtube take up about a quarter of my screen..
Anyway. But yes i have watched every dub so far i have bought.. apart from Bleach, Naruto and Death Note. lol. cos they all suck xD Believe it

Ah thats not really fair though tbh, my friend who isn't the brightest guy in the world, really does sometimes have to stop and re-read it because it goes fast for him, he aint a fast reader soooooo.

im not exactly a genius xD but even so the subs are up there for long time. well long enough. its only if you have someone with a sudden burst hes talking really fast u have to pay attention or if like gintama has constant notes at the top.

When you've watched so much anime you don't even notice your reading, it becomes second-nature that you already pick up on it.

I watch subs because I prefer their lips to be in sync with the words they are saying. I have never found subs to be a problem, reading them etc, it has never bothered me. What does bother me is bad voiceover actors though. As has been stated, subs also come out before dubs and the list of advantages goes on.
Agree with Paul about above as well, when you're watching it you just apply the english words to the japanese sounds so it doesn't 'feel' like they're talking japanese.
I think the thing about doing other stuff whilst watching it is just Jord.

^ Good, only dub for the early eps is 4kids. well the funimation dub which is good is out on dvd but dont think anyone has put them online.
Practically everything I watch is subbed. If I really enjoy an anime in the Sub and I have heard some good things about the dub then I will give it a try, but most of the time. Its companies like 4kids what ruin people for watching good subs to be honest and I think that less of 4kids would have meant more people would watch dub. I for one like Ryuzaki said just think watching the sub is how the anime was supposed to be, and how it originally was. No cut scenes, no silly voice acting. Just the way it actually was supposed to be. But hey! Be optimistic ;) Watch both and make your own minds up.
One sub I hated was .hack/sign, I have no idea why I just really hated it, But to be honest I started hating that anime during the end of the series anyway. ;) And I just hate everything done by 4kids.
The FMA dub was brilliant. That in fact did change my mind a lot about dubs.

^ Funimation are really good with there dubs. like. i know for OP and FMA its been the the higher ups in japan who have given the ok fr the voices i know Oda gave the ok for the OP cast.
I like subbed It's not like I read anything else ROFL!

Subtitles, for the simple reason that they're more thought out, planned, better directed, unedited, original and raw. Nothing in the entire world should be dubbed unless its a childrens program because quite simply its not how the movie, series, program or whatever is meant to be watched. Dubs alter from the original directors intentions, which can completely change the meaning of a program. Dubs miss out on a lot of the small details that are actually very important as well, and thats because dubbing takes place a while after a series, movie, program, etc has come out, it doesn't usually take place in production. That's a bad thing because they don't have the original director or any of the original staff to direct them. Instead they have a voice director, who only has limited information on the show that is being dubbed. Hence why dubs can also seem a lot more simple than subtitles. A prime example of this is the Evangelion dub. I felt dumber watching that dub because all the information that is presented to us in the original Japense version isn't included in the dub. Also, of course not verything can be tanslated so a lot of details are lost in translation, which alters from the directors original intentions yet again. I've seen some dubs which have left out references to Japanese history because an American audience wouldn't get it. A simple translation note can fix that but of course thats against the dubbing law because it's words on the screen, just what they're trying to prevent. So the reference is taken out altogether. Yes, there are some very good dubs out there, such as in Guyver, Dragon Ball Z and The Place Promised in Our Early Days, but if those shows were never dubbed I wouldn't care.

Even though I've still hardly watched anything, subs all the way.
I don't see how dubs can be deemed as "better". Fair enough if you can't be bothered concentrating as much but it won't be better.
The concentration thing is part of why I haven't watched much, but I sill would rather wait until I have time to watch something subbed rather than settle it dubbed.
