View Full Version : iMac good for gaming?
I just did a few google searches and found forums with posts from 2007 (so they might of been talking about an older iMac) and they all seemed to be saying that iMacs are terrible for gaming? Could anyone tell me if this particular iMac would be good for gaming?

Only games I play are Age of Empires and Rise of Nations. Both had a OSX version.
I actually run XP in Parallels and have no problem gaming with that, if need be.

It's got a 9400M graphics card and a dual core processor, it's not terrible at gaming, but it's not exactly top of the line.

The most graphics-demanding games will struggle, but I can run CoD4 with no issues. Obviously you need to use some kind of virtualisation software if you want to run a game requiring DirectX, but on the newer Macs (i.e. no Intel GMA chipset) you shouldn't have too many problems.

There's new iMacs coming out in October, so specifications are subject to change.

and on that note, i'd go for a dell xps laptop, it is a gaming laptop.

That + Windows 7 would be more than amazing:).
I'm no elite gamer, I would only be going on games such as Runescape and a few other similar games. I might be playing other more detailed games which is why I made this thread. HotelUser, where can I find out about the new iMac? If you mean this october then I will wait for that one.

The refreshed iMacs haven't been announced yet, so you'll have to wait over the coming days if you wish to see the new specs.
Runescape will run smoothly with the highest graphics settings on any recent Mac – it's really not intensive. If there are any other games you have in mind, drop the names here and we'll let you know how well they fare.

iMac is pretty good, for gaming as long as it has a decent graphics card! Runescape isn't that high spec so it should look fine.

We know October because iMac supply is getting low, and there was a Google adsense new iMac ad leaked in germany or something like that. The ad said the iMac is slimmer. Most people are assuming the new iMac will have a new look (as it's had the same one for years now), and use the new mobile intel quad processors, as opposed to the current core 2 duos.
I saw something about an FCC filing made by Apple concerning a mighty mouse that's entirely touch sensitive. No guarantees but it might include that, too.

Alienware is garbage.
Because you can't afford a $2,500 gaming Laptop?
I use Alienware for all of my games, best I've ever used, wouldn't trade it for anything.

Whatever, if he's actually tried Alienware and thinks it's crap, than he's entitled to his opinion, same as I am.
It's really sweet, and I'd never get anything else.

You're talking to the guy who just spend like £2,500 (POUNDS, YES POUNDS, so ~$5,000) on a **** load of new stuff, for e.g. a Core i7 processor.
You sir, have been ripped off and are now digging your self a deeper hole, want to fill it in now or get a bigger shovel? :P
Alienware computers are Dell computers in shiny cases with an extra £100 - £1000 added on :P

I didn't mean anything by it.

Sick of having an opinion and people jumping all over me for it :P
Seeing as I've never owned a mac, I really can't comment on that part of the thread.
You could have got something similar performing for half the price of your Alienware. That's what we're lol'ing at.

Although if you're really not confident / you really don't want to mess with the insides of your computer and want something that works with no tinkering and you want a high performance gaming PC then Alienware is the way to go I guess, although I'd imagine you may be able to find a better deal at the smaller retailers.

Yeah, and the smart ones will know you probably have more money than sense :P. But if you're happy with it that's all that matters ;).
Well this is an annoying situation. I've been waiting to get an iMac for over a month, we got rid of my old drum kit yesterday to make room for the desk. I could go and get one tomorrow night but now there is a new iMac coming out it would be better in the long run if I carried on waiting. I'm so impatient and the fact that there isn't an official release date also pee's me off. :@ The price? Is the new one gonna be more than £1,500? I ain't waiting for a computer that I won't even be allowed to get. :(

Wait until the end of October. The new one wont be more money. Even if it is, you can go to the official Apple refurbished store and get discounts on current macs, when the new ones come out:).

you could always build your own - we did it at college pretty good and achievable when your stuff gets outdated, open it up and take components out and replace it :D

Do you live in a parallel world? iMacs are **** for the latest games, even with Windows, and Vista isn't that bad so don't try to start arguments please. :)
