If you have put all your music on to your iPhone using your laptop, then you can't use your computer to transfer items to it. It will wipe it before allowing you to transfer files to it. It's a bit silly to be honest that you can only transfer items using one computer at a time.

To be honest I'm not fussed about the music, but if I plug it into my new computer it will wipe my contacts, right?
That's ridiculous, basically the whole time you have an iPhone, if you change pc/laptop you're ******? :/

It should allow you to save your contacts. Mine does. When you plug your iPhone in, does it say Syncing? If it does then its saving your contacts etc. You can then reformat it and they backup will be available on your computer to transfer back :)

Sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't, whenever I plug it in now I get about 3 pop ups saying theres updates etc. etc. and I always just close it.
