View Full Version : How to tell my family...
I've wanted to be a forensic scientist for a while. However, that dream ended. I have a massive passion for teaching. I want to teach! My mother thinks that I want to be a forensic scientist, I mentioned that I thought about teaching, she just replied "Pfft, you don't want to be a teacher do you? They have horrible pay, you want to have professor by your name or something".
My heart is set on teaching, I'm not going to let her get in the way, but my Mum, and my whole family, are very stereotypical and racist. I can't believe I was brought up by them tbh. If I say I want to be a teacher, they'd probably think I was homosexual. As that's a "homosexual norm" supposedly?! It's a "womans job". Idc if it was or wasn't, I want to teach.
BUT, how do I tell her? My grandad, who is, unfortunately, close to death, says "I am fighting for my life, just for you. I want to see you graduate from university" :'( I don't want to upset him, when I see him he gets excited because I'm going to be this big forensic scientist.

Much more straight teachers than gay teachers in my opinion.
Just tell them you want to be a teacher, it's your decision not there's
How do I go about telling them though?

Teaching isn't a gay or feminine profession :S also what are you wanting to teach? You'll still need to go to uni, get a degree and then do a separate teaching course, so you can really still go along the forensics line if that still interests you, and then once you've got the degree decide whether you want to go into that or teaching or whatever else opens itself up
edit: the degree you get doesn't need to relate in any way to what subject you want to teach, it'll only help in that you'll already know the subject

yeah, you have to go to uni. maybe do a science related degree once that's finished you can tell them you've decided to be a teacher.
I'm doing a join course. "Primary and Secondary science teaching" or something along those lines. 3 years and it'll fully qualify me to teach science in either a Primary or Secondary school.

Being a teacher is a very good respectable job. You're mum has just probably got so use to you saying that you want to be a forensic scientist that she has set her heart on her little boy becoming one. She just wants to be able to tell her friends that 'oh my boy is a forensic scientist' blablabla. It's you're life and you should do what you want with it. Good luck!

I'm pretty much going to say what others have said and say it's your life not theirs.
I know everyone wants to make their parents proud, but when it comes down to things like future occupations and things like that you have to put yourself first, whether your parents like it or not. You should not have to feel pressurised into doing/being something you don't want to be, because at the end of the day your the one thats going to have to live with the regret of not doing what it is you want to do.
I honestly hope it goes well with telling your mum tonight :), she should be proud that your taking your future seriously!
Just tell her. And if all goes wrong tell her you could be a university lecturer or something and still get professor before your name. It's still teaching ;).

It's your life, job prospects of being a teacher is much higher than being a forensic scientist. Where the jobs counts is better.
Some Universities offer to do education at the same time as doing a degree. I was doing Computing Science with Professional Education. Meaning I could become a qualified teacher in 3 years but also have an Honours degree after 4 years.
Reasearch everything out thoroughly ;)

Obviously you have to go into university in teaching, then do your MA. Start in the low rank working in a primary school as part of your past experience then make your way up.
Just go to your parents, that your eyes are set on teaching.

I kind of had the same problem, about a year ago i wanted to be a forensic scientist but i didnt get the grades in science. My parents was well behind me to become a forensic scientist and they said they was so proud i wanted to be something that i know i'd enjoy. But when i never got the grades, plus i had kind of changed my mind to peforming/acting (im doing btec acting at college now) i just had to come out with it to them, tell them i wasnt getting the grades, i knew i would get the grades for drama, and they was behind me. Plus its not asif your changing alot like me, your still doing science which is really good! Good luck :)

Being a teacher is still a highly respectable career choice. Tell her you want to quit school to become a hairdresser, then tell her ur just kidding and u want to be a teacher. That way it wont seem as bad:)
