View Full Version : Noctua U12P ~ CPU Cooler

Hi,

SInce my CPU was hitting temperatures of 60C IDLE, I had to buy a new fan.

After looking at the Arctic Extreme Cooler, stock fan and the Noctua U12P fan, the reviews all pointed to the - rather ugly - Noctua U12P fan.

All I can say is EXCEPTIONAL.

My temperatures this morning with my standard stock intel fan installed:

Core 0 - 58C
Core 1 - 55C
Core 2 - 60C
Core 3 - 60C

My temperatures now with the Noctua U12P Fan installed:

Core 0 - 25C
Core 1 - 24C
Core 2 - 36C
Core 3 - 38C

In one case that means the Noctua fan has decreased my temps by a fantastic 31C!

----

All be it, the stock intel fan did have two pins damaged so it did not sit extremely close to the CPU (1/2mm further away from the CPU), but still 31C is a great drop.

Although the fan does have a high price (£35-£50), I would reccomend this to ANYONE.

:)

I've got the arctic extreme cooler and my CPU has never hit over 40, ever.

EDIT: Hang on thats a lie, I just checked my fan settings and its 41 degrees... but then, in my defence, my computer has been on for 6 days nonstop lol.

I ordered the OCZ Vendetta II brand new from an eBay seller last week and I'm still waiting :(

10c difference between the two sets of cores... you don't have it seated properly.

I agree and he probably didn't have the stock cooler seated properly either by those temps as stock clocks.

Hahahaha well done on being a failure at reading,

All be it, the stock intel fan did have two pins damaged

And the only reason those pins got damaged is because I had to turn the power off one day, because of a burning smell (CPU overheating) - oh and wait that was with the stock.

Nonono! I have nothing against the freezer cooler - just reviews rated the Noctua very slightly higher. I am a fan of the freezer one too :) Looks a very good cooler!

Patience :)

EDIT: Same as I said to Stephen Nick. But the only reason it got damaged is I had to take it off due to burning.

Tbh it's a ***** to get into a case. i've got a CM Storm Scout and really, I struggled to get it in properly but I managed :P

How is he being a failure at reading? Core 0 and 1 are mid 20's. Core 2 and 3 are mid-high 30's. That's over 10 degrees difference meaning it's likely not on properly.

And I missed the bit about stock pins being damaged (how did you manage that?), but that won't affect this cooler ;).

Yeh but the attraction to the Arctic one is you don't need to take everything out for a backplate do you?

I had to take my pc apart this afternoon! Although as reviews said - the end result is great.

Had to tak pc apart, get the backplate on then put it back together again :D

And I love you! I have the CM Storm Scout too :D - God knows what size case they want the Arctic freezer in then :D

Damn Noctua HSF's are ugly things but I am told that they are beasts of a cooler.

You stated that the stock heatsink was broken, not the new one you just purchased.

100% agreed about ugly. They are seriously ugly - beige in colour :P

But they are exceptional coolers.

Stephen - you want pictures to proove it has been done properly? :\

The results speak for themselves.

Why do you get all offensive because I said that it wasn't seated right?

I'm just stating the facts. At most, the temperature differences between all the cores should be no more than 2-3c. Yours have a difference of 10.

Of course, you wouldn't be able to see it by looking as it will be on a much smaller scale.

Here is a diagram. On the left is how it should be seated (as close to flat as possible). All four cores are around the same temp.
On the right, it is possibly what has happened in your case. It's not making full contact with the cores on the right hand side thus increasing the temperatures.

Anyway. Idle temps mean nothing. Load the CPU to 100% and then see what the results are. Hopefully they might even themselves out.

Yeah, run it at 100% for a bit and look at the temps. If they're within 5 degrees or so then all is good.

Anything you would reccomend do really get the PC going at full power. E.G. Programs?

Atm I only have demos for games.

SuperPi. Everyone wants to know the digits of pi. http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=36 Set it to calculate numerous milions.

Pleased to say after searching for 4 million digits of PI my CPU NEVER went over 40C. What's more is that all cores stayed at a fairly even temp :)

Those results look fine. The HSF seems to be properly seated. Btw, what cpu paste are you using?

Good stuff, but you need it running longer than that to see what the max it will go to is. Do 32M. Good to see the temps evened out though ;). You selected 4 CPUs from the dropdown didn't you though?

Good old expensive Arctic Silver 5 paste.

Didn't actually need it as didn't realise the fan came with paste of its own -but the ArcticSiver 5 is higher quality so oh well :)

Some reason my CPU doesnt even reach 100% load when calculating Pi up to 4M. Is that normal haha?

Actually it probably should be more like low 40s with a Vendetta according to what other people on the internet seem to have with it overclocked. Maybe you need to clean some dust out of the case fans and HSF?

Woops, my temps were 10c too high because I didn't offset the TjMax by -10, for Q6600s it's actually 90.
