View Full Version : Suggestion for the Sports section: Online Streaming

I was thinking of creating a private website for Habbox Forum users to watch matches online, and I mean every Premier League game and what else is shown live on TV (e.g. Boxing, Championship football, league football, and other sports of interest).

I would have a website (www.websitehere.com/sports) and plan on having about 6 channels (www.websitehere.com/sports/sportchannel1) etc - on these pages would be the live game/sporting event, with the option of going full screen, kind of like www.iraqgoals.net, but on a less scale. Plus it would be more private - ONLY for HxF users and family/friends.

I have a website ready to set this up with, so it's all about the feedback I get.

If this idea proves popular, then I would have the website up for next week. I would create a thread here in the Sports section, that I intend on getting stickied, and every week I'd post the passwords to each channel of my site (will be password protecting them, to stop leechers/loss of bandwidth) which I will be changing every week. In the stickied thread I would post what is on what channel and what the passwords are for those channels.

I would be doing this in BETA stages, as I don't know the effect it'd have on my website bandwidth (I know it'll take a bit of bandwidth up, but shouldn't be too much, as the stream would just be an embedded code), BETA stage will last for the next five weeks, after that I may enhance the website make-up and take the passwords off the channels, to make it more popular.

If however I find it a pain in the arse and can't be arsed anymore, then I would just stop with this project, but I doubt that'd happen, as it'd give me something to do. (still haven't figured out how I would go about doing this when Wolves are at home, as I won't be in to maintain the streams... I'll figure it out though :P)

PLEASE NOTE - IF WHENEVER I CHECK HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE VIEWING CERTAIN CHANNELS (within the first five weeks), IF THE NUMBER EXCEEDS 20, I WOULD CLOSE THE THE CHANNEL/CHANGE THE PASSWORD.

When the sporting events are on, I will be checking the channels frequently to see if the stream has gone down, and if it has, I'll put an alternative stream on their.

I also understand that sometimes I will not be able to get EVERY Premier League match up, unfortunately this is down to if their are streams available for the match, but I am confident of getting MOST games up live.

On the website I would also have a 'schedule page' - where you will be able to see whats on what channel and when. (over the next one/two weeks or something)

So yeh, all down to your views, could be a good idea, could be crap. If you are going to post back in this thread, please don't post **** like ''OH NO IT'LL BE CRAP BLA BLA BLA" - Instead please post CONSTRUCTIVELY.

Oh and please MODs, don't move this to the suggestions forum, I want it to be here, as it'd be mainly the Sports forum viwers using it.

Would this be a good idea?
Please vote in the poll, and post CONSTRUCTIVELY only.

Will you be hosting your own streams or just mirroring others..?

StefanWolves
25-10-2009, 06:30 PM
Mirroring, that'd rape my bandwidth, totally. Which is why if a stream goes down, I would put another one on ASAP if possible.

Are you hosting on your iphone?

i'd use it yeah, whether it's a good idea or whether habbox would allow you do it through their site is another matter.

Why should it concern Habbox? they allow illegal warez to be posted and illegal streams like iraqgoals/justin.tv.

If they wouldn't allow a stickied thread then I'd just post a new thread each weak. lol.

true, good point. it's just you'll be basing yourself around habbox and i know it's not official or anything but not sure if they'd want you too. they might not have an issue with it, just speculating.

don't see why they would. i don't really see how stickying a thread would be promoting it. :P

Not constructive, so why bother?

The reason I am creating this is to maintain speed, and ease of use. Instead of trawling through those links and other websites to find a good stream, I'd do all the hard work for you.

Easy, quick, and simple.

I also forgot to mention that their would be NO advertising on any of my channels? unlike other streams. :P

I am also thinking about putting chatboxes in each channel, for our forum members to communicate easily, unlike other streams that have chatboxes, where there are thousands of idiots posting pointless crap. :P

How would you know if it's a good stream until it's live? Thus making it impossible for you and inconvinient for us if we have to wait 10 minutes and miss part of the match whilst you're finding a good stream.

I'll stick with myp2p, ustream, sopcast and justin.tv thanks.

It would take me two minutes. If that. I also know from past experience what the better and more reliable streams are.

If your intention was to throw this back in my face with the middle finger, then well done. It worked.

It just seems pointless when there are plenty of other sites that offer this service and probably of a better standard than you would.

I'm allowed to have an opinion, right? Even if it doesn't agree with yours.

Yeah I think it would be OK with Habbox other than the part about a stickied thread.

I'm not sure if I would use it though. When I've tried watching streams in the past it's always been really frustrating and I'd much rather just wait for MOTD or if I must have it live, listen to it on the radio. However if it's a reliable service as you make it sound, I'd probably give it a chance. If this goes ahead, thanks in advance :).

Edit:I just thought to ask, why would you bother going to all the trouble? Just curious.

It'd be reliable, I'd make sure of it. I don't know, it gives me something else to do on Saturdays when Wolves play away from home, + I like a challenge. I'm also looking to get a job doing something I.T-ish, so any experience I can get only helps. I'd only be doing it for like a few hours during the weekend, so it's not really much time nor effort really.

It'll start off very basic hopefully (if it actually happens) - and then I'd look to enhance it. It'll help me out quite a lot, good experience if I go to Uni on managing a website, developing and designing etc.

That's why. ;)

iraqgoals.net are the best at the moment, but they aren't so reliable. but you are on the rite lines, sopcast is the best application to watch live games, you just need to find that rite link/channel.

glad you'd find it helpful. :)

yeh i see you basically download software and then watch them through that.

Whats the quality like? I was just watching a south american game through justin.tv and it was poor, plus it kept stoping every few seconds..

Quality of what? the streams on my website? I would try to get at least a 400kbps stream, which would run pretty smoothly on full screen. I'll try get 500kbps + streams which is even better, but at bare minimum I'd get 300kbps streams.

Btw, Sopcast has very good quality streams if you can find that rite one.

I mean like the picture quality.

I think it's just my internet anyway, it's poor so doesnt look like i can even watch any tv online lol.

StefanWolves
26-10-2009, 12:13 AM
kbps is the picture quality, it's how fast its streaming, meaning how good the picture quality it is. Your internet should be able to handle 300-800kbps download speed easily.

What speed is your internet at?

Good idea. That my2p2 or w/e never works for me for some reason.

1 suggestion. To limit people/leachers. Do the first 20 people (or however many you want) to reply get sent to pass through PM. Makes sure no guests or random people will use it.

Good Idea though, would use it :)

I don't honestly see how it can work if you're mirroring so I'll put no for now. If you somehow manage to pull it off I'll be surprised and congratulate you however I'll wait and see...

I just don't understand how you'll be able to make sure that the stream you're mirroring will...

A) Be showing the exact game until a second before kickoff
B) Wont change halfway through
C) Wont lag
D) Wont be taken down

StefanWolves

A) Be showing the exact game until a second before kickoff

I'll know for sure, 100%.

B) Wont change halfway through

It won't change half way through, guaranteed.

C) Wont lag

The webpage won't lag, if at all, and it'll be speedy. If the streams starts to lag then I will change the stream within two minutes, as I'll be checking all streams regularly. (with help from feedback of the viewers).

D) Wont be taken down

What my website or the stream? my website won't get taken down as it'll be private, and if the stream gets taken down I will change the stream.
