Hi

Im getting a 3GS tomorrow and have been looking into jailbreaking it, now, I understand that people are saying, you can't jailbreak it unless it's 3.0, however i was reading somewhere that "blackra1n" can do 3.1.2 (or w/e its called), is this true, and if so, are there any specific instructions? As its just an exe.

Many Thanks
Luke

yeh use blackra1n. it's piss easy, just click "make it ra1n" and it does it for you. then go onto your iphone, click on the 'blackra1n' icon and install Cydia, then uninstall the 'blackra1n' icon. easy. takes 5 mins tops.

also, blacksnow is out soon, will unluck all iphones on the latest firmware.

it's not harder to update firmware at all, you just have to wait a bit longer until that firmware is unlocked/worked around. also yeh, icy is being discontinued as ripdev (who keep run icy and keep it up to date) have given up on it, and can't be bothered with the jailbreaking community anymore - so i'd avoid that if i were you.

fair doos, about updating firmware - if i have it jailbroken (not unlocked) then all i need to do is restore, update (and providing the latest ra1n is out) jailbreak it again?

exactly. just back up your cydia apps via pkgbackup (in cydia store) then update in itunes, update to firmware, re-jailbreak, and restore the backup.

if your not bothered about loosing your cydia apps then yeh just do what you said.

Well, i wasn't realy going to use cyndia that much anyways (downloading the .ips files from warez sites).

Everything sounds good!
Thanks.

why bother doing that? just install installous (via cydia) and download the .ipas from their straight onto on your iphone. much easier.

Hmm, so, on installous, where does it get the list of apps? For example, I want x-plane.

when you install it, and you open installous up, it'll be like the appstore, everything is free though (even paid apps). then all you do is click 'search' for the app you want, and install it. done. :)

Icy is actually a dead project now, Cydia is the only real player.

And Cydia is certainly good enough. Now that Canada Bell Mobility has the iPhone people in my area can get it (because Rogers Mobility was the only carrier with the iPhone before and we don't get Rogers coverage), several friends have gotten the iPhone. Cydia has matured vastly since I last saw it. Now I'm not sure if I want the Motorola Droid with Android or the iPhone with iPhoneOS:P

You might not be able to jailbreak if it has the new boot rom though? or did they get around it

They'll get round the bootroom.
