Video Camera?

I'm looking at buying a new video camera, one with a hard drive but I heard they automatically compress videos into mpeg, does this mean when you are recording and you pause then start again it won't have different frames?

What I mean is with the old tape ones you would put it onto something like movie maker and just drag the frames you wanted, whats it like with the hard drive cameras?

i was going to get one of those flip camera, but the price put me off.

How can the price put you off? I think it's a really good price for something that shoot in 720p
