Apparently breaking down on motorway, dual carrage way and two sided roads have different diffrences of how far the sign should be. +rep for help theory is tomorrow!

on normal road i think its 45 metres from your car i dont know about motorway, i dont think you put it on motorway as its unsafe walking like 45 metres away from car to stick a triangle down you just use hazard lights and hope noone hits you :P

edit; yeh according to AA's website

Place a warning triangle behind your vehicle in a clearly visible position
Roads: approximately 30 metres behind
European Motorways: approximately 100 metres behind
UK Motorways: do not use a warning triangle as this is illegal for safety reasons
edit edit; on another page its got

If it is safe and you have one, put a warning triangle or other permitted warning device on the road at least 45 metres (50 yards) behind your broken down vehicle on the same side of the road. Always take great care when doing this.

lol.

so i'd say
- normal road 45 m
- motorway nowhere
