Lately I've only been getting two bars of signal on my laptop so using the internet has been slow and frustrating. Although I use the laptop in my room, while the router is downstairs which is often providing a signal for another desktop and a games console all simultaneously, I still usually get at least four bars, if not the full five. It's also been difficult to last a whole game of COD on the 360 without the signal failing.

I don't actually know how many meg we are paying for but I'd just like to know what the above test looks like to anyone who is in the know. Are they average figures or really bad, and what is the "ping" thing all about?

Just as a note; in the other chart that shows my result vs the ISP's average, my upload speed is just over half but my download speed is just above the minimum. The ISP averages are both just below the maximum though.

Cheers x

Hey

Basically Opal Telecom means you are on Talk Talk Broadband or Utility Warehouse Broadband.

You are getting 450kb download (Basically how fast you can download from the internet) Unless you live out in the sticks, this is quite poor. Your upload (320kb) is pretty average. The ping is how fast a servers response is to a ping requestion, Basically your Computer goes Ping? and the server replies Pong. and then that time is recorded.

You could move the router to another place? Or change to Wireless Channel 1, 6 or 13 on your router. see if that improves things. It seems there is some interference between your router/your room.

Yep, it is Utility Warehouse. I'll try your suggestions although it's only deteriorated over the last couple of days and I'm using my laptop in exactly the same position as I always do and the router hasn't moved.

Could the distance from the server be a factor? It says it's in Birmingham 50 miles away, as I live in Liverpool basically. Also could the weather be a factor in regards to the server? As it's been teaming down over the last couple days which happens to be the same time it started performing badly.

Try the speedtest server in manchester. I reckon its more of something causing interference, Does it happen at certain times of the day? Have you or your neighbours got anything new?

It only gives me Birmingham and Coventry. Anything as in... something big outside? Nope. Don't think it's certain times of the day either. It just went off completely for a minute then as I tried to post this.

Change to channel 13 see if that helps, is there any crackling on the phone line?

EDIT: This will sound silly, but is there anyone on the phone? A microwave on? It sounds like some interference along the wireless

I'm not sure how to do that but I was going to look it up next time I have the time :P. Nope no crackling. Rep given, thanks.

This happened to me quite a while ago.

I reset my router, but that didnt work, but try it anyway.

What I did, was on the back of my router there was a tiny little button which I could just about fit a pen in. if you have this, press it 7 times to reset your router completely. I did this and its been fine since.

Ahh reset to manufacturer.

If it has a ariel, has that become loose?

If I do this won't anything need reconfiguring? And couldn't it affect the other stuff like my mum's PC, the PS3 and 360? I'm too scared to mess with stuff like that because I might not know how to fix it afterwards :P.

edit @Dave: that had been a problem so now we've got this larger, stronger ariel. And nope nothings on lol, just my brother on the 360. But that would all be normal stuff anyway, it's only been giving me a bad signal over the last couple of days on the laptop and 360. Just as a note, my mum's PC has been unaffected as it's wired while the rest of the stuff is wireless.

A couple of things might need reconfiguring, but not to much. Also, it wont affect your mums pc, xbox or ps3, just as long as you dont change the settings on them.

OT - Whats your PSN name?

OK thanks +rep.
PSN name is Robaldinio but I'm rarely on it. Only been on COD4 and GTA BOGT lately, both on 360. I'll also be on MW2 on the 360 come Tuesday :D.

2 bars wireless signal means jack all, ring the buggering company up and complain.

Job done.

edit: Also that isn't 450Kbp/s down speed.

It's really weird though because my brother seems to have no trouble with playing the 360 online, but as soon as I go on it it gives me 'signal interrupted' :S and just now, my laptop is receiving a full signal!

Could anyone give me an idea of how to change it to channel 13 as Dave suggested?

Within your router wireless settings there should be a channel option

A couple of days ago I simply tried moving the Xbox's wireless adapter from the rear USB port to one on the front and since then there have been no problems what so ever with the Xbox OR my laptop... :S

Doesn't make sense but it seems to have worked. Although the torrential rain also stopped around the same time so I still think that may have something to do with it :P.

Thanks for the suggestions guys!
