View Full Version : OSX Feedback
Hey,
Well i've been running OSX for a few days now from Windows 7 and heres my feedback (Hope someone can help me out on a few points as well):
- You can't tell the difference between two finder windows open with the same folder name. I quite often have two windows open with the same folder name, especially when transferring stuff from my home server to my local apache for testing
- No lock screen functionality. Seems you have to enable password on screensaver and use a hot spot for a screensaver, seems a bit of a pain.
- Logging into file share on a windows server and putting files on them results in them having no ntfs file permissions except administrator and system, not even the user you logged into the share with has permissions.
- Adding write permissions for "all users" does not include "nobody" which apache runs as in xampp so I have to do chmod a+w <file name> every time I want to make a file writable by apache.
- You can control individual application's volumes, I really liked this feature in windows :(
- Pressing f12, f11, f10 or f9 in games results in the osx functionality of these keys being used rather than the function of the keys in the game.
- You can't use finder to FTP into servers that have a "@" in the username.
Apart from that, i'm loving OSX. While I can live with these issues would be nice if there is a way to fix them or something - Don't worry i'm not going to go back to Windows over them. :P
Thanks,
Tom
Can't really help you with any of them, I'm new to Mac myself. I do quite like the screensaver lock function though. Just slide the mouse into the corner of the screen and bobs your uncle. Then it doesn't look like I have locked it, locking it (in my parents eyes) might think I have something to hide even if it is just to make sure siblings don't go on.

One thing I've found about OS X is that it always looks better on someone elses machine. I spend most of my time on windows 7 on my macbook, mainly due to taking it to college and doing work there.
Still, looking at Mint's iMac thread makes me drool... yet my own install does not. hmm.

Yea, I'm on Windows 7 on my MacBook at the moment as I've been doing some work for Uni and Office:Mac or whatever just doesn't cut it compared to the proper Windows version. It's strange that now I'm on 7 I'm wanting to go back into OS X, but when I'm on OS X something draws me to wanting to use Windows 7 :S.

You can click and hold Finder in the dock if you're on SL.
- No lock screen functionality. Seems you have to enable password on screensaver and use a hot spot for a screensaver, seems a bit of a pain.
if you press command, option and eject on the keyboard it goes into sleep mode, and locks the machine. You might have to enable locking while coming from sleep in system preferences.
- Logging into file share on a windows server and putting files on them results in them having no ntfs file permissions except administrator and system, not even the user you logged into the share with has permissions.
I haven't encountered Windows file sharing problems on OS X. I can even set up filesharing on the Mac and works on my PC:(
- Adding write permissions for "all users" does not include "nobody" which apache runs as in xampp so I have to do chmod a+w <file name> every time I want to make a file writable by apache.
I ran XAMPP and giving permissions to "everyone" in apache was working for me.
- You can control individual application's volumes, I really liked this feature in windows :(
There's probably several third party apps to do this.
- Pressing f12, f11, f10 or f9 in games results in the osx functionality of these keys being used rather than the function of the keys in the game.
If you hold down "fn" on the keyboard then hit these keys they will work as the function keys.
- You can't use finder to FTP into servers that have a "@" in the username.
Google search MacFusion, lets you mount FTP and SFTP drives.

Apple Office is superior, especially smooth moves in the Apple slideshow thing.

yes they have, theres a ton of new things. New designs, new transitions that are really nice, and they have new picture effects, new movie effects.

It doesn't look as nice though, there's no consistent UI elements in ANY of their apps, which gets annoying and frustrating and of course, doesn't look good.

Oops, go to "Settings" on your dock, then go to System -> "Accounts".
Bottom click "Login Options".
Then check "Enable Fast User Switching". :) I display mine as the icon instead of the name.
