Bah... doing A-Level coursework, if I wasn't i'd write a brief Windows jailbreak tutorial and Mac jailbreak tutorial. :P
Can i also point out that the blackra1n jailbreak does not work with newer iphones with the new bootrom =[

It will eventually, you were just unlucky that you got a brand new one. :(

It does work, however it's tethered, meaning u must run blackra1n every time u power off your device and want to turn it back on

when i first got my iphone, i used this (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=457556) thread which i thought was very helpful. virtually defines everything for beginners and provides useful download links for firmwares, unlocking tools etc.
hope they can actually jailbreak the new bootrom properly!! I want to have my iphone jailbroken, but if it restarts and im not at home - fooked.

Just noticed this thread! What's your fav jailbroken app guys?
Mine is probably Sbsettings, oddly enough!
And I like the beyoiphone, xsellize, and the other one with the cracked apps ;)

The best apps IMO are Sbsettings, MyWi, 3G unrestrictor and Installous v2.5.
Best repo by far is ModMyI/xSellize.

What is your default webpage for Installous? I love the beta that was released, shame that it doesn't work any more :(

The app I use most is MyWi for tethering my iPhone and also SBSettings. Got myself a nice custom theme using Winterboard as well that is matched in SBSettings.

I've got a 2nd gen touch running 3.1.3, don't know whether to jailbreak it or not. Is there a jailbreak out for 3.1.3 yet?
Btw, typing this on the touch.

Not yet for 3.1.3.
Just installed a great App, called "updatr", what it does is basically if you install cracked Apps via installous, it tells your when an update is out for them, really handy, and it also gives you a link to update the App.

Hey guys, I've got an Ipod Touch 2G running 2.2.1 software. I really want to jailbreak it but don't want to lose anything on it for instance music and photos. If I jailbreak it can I keep all that stuff as it's already on it? If I can, is there a way to jailbreak it for noobs 'cos I'm really bad when it comes to this sort of stuff and will probably end up bricking it lol.
Thanks. :)

I think that 'Lockdown' is the best app for Jailbroken iDevices by far. It allows you to pin protect applications you choose.

He can't. Like he said, Spirit is for 3.1.2, 3.1.3 and 3.2. He needs a jailbreak for 2.2.1.

Redsn0w 0.3 should work for 2.2.1, download it here >> http://www.mediafire.com/?ymj50xmg1bt
Or from a torrent here >> http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4841586/redsn0w-win_0.3.zip
Just put the ipod into DFU and run redsn0w.exe
I can't remember if it deletes all of your stuff, so just back everything up through itunes before you do it :)
If you prefer to use a GUI (it's much easier), you could use QuickFreedom >> http://quickfreedom.com/
I used redsn0w and quickfreedom ages ago to jailbreak mine and my friend's ipods, both worked perfectly :)

iPhone 2G - not supported
iPod Touch - not supported
iPod Touch 3G - not supported
iPhone 3gs is also not supported unless you jailbroke it before*
*as long you saved your old bootrom.

Any progress on a jailbreak for iPhone 4 yet? I'm pretty keen on doing it to mine after seeing my dad jailbreak his iPad and all the free stuff you can get (never really paid attention to jailbreaking before)

TBH, can't really see much point in jail-breaking iOS4, only real advantage I could see prior to 4 was multi-tasking & custom backgrounds, but they're official now.

custom sms tones, tweaks (for me it is character count, sbsettings which lets me disable/enable data) etc..

No not that, that was a hoax apparently. Comex on twitter said and I quote 'save your shah blobs, I'm not waiting for 4.1', that was last night. I think by the weekend we will have a jailbreak for 4.0/4.0.1.

Ok, so I've came across a jailbreak for iPod touch 2G and iPhones with OS 4.0.
If you go to www.jailbreakme.com on your device you can jailbreak is easy as from that website, without the need of a computer. Just done it fine for me, haven't come across any problems, yet.
It installs Cydia.
Afterwards if you'd like to turn on multi-tasking and background screen simply download the ZToggle package. More info here:
