Do you/did you give gifts to teachers?
If so, what did you give?
What do you think teachers don't like to get?
What do you think they WOULD like to get?
Do you have teaching relatives (or are you a teacher yourself) and can provide some insight?

I've been blogging about this issue, on http://www.bringinghimback.blogspot.com (just linking so you know what I'm on about) and I'd love more suggestions for things not to give to teachers! And soon I'll be making a list of good suggestions for teacher gifts and why.

What do you think about my list? Am I too harsh?

It's really common to do it here in SA, I would imagine it'd also be common in Melbourne, though perhaps not in high school? (Though I always at least gave a card).

Depends. If you have departments, give the whole department a box of chocolates (a big tin of them). For individual teachers we gave: wine, chocolate or pen sets :)

Never really understood the whole gift thing unless it was maternity leave or something. It's their job after all.

Do you/did you give gifts to teachers? I usually didnt want too unless they were really nice(or i was getting a bad mark:P) mostly my mom wanted me to give them stuff.
If so, what did you give? Wine bottles/chocolates stuff like that
What do you think teachers don't like to get? crappy things they wont use, everyone usually likes chocolate/ bottle of wine
What do you think they WOULD like to get? they wont ever say they dont like something so your good with anything but id stick with the normal stuff as ive said
Do you have teaching relatives (or are you a teacher yourself) and can provide some insight? My mom is and even if the gift is crap she still likes that the kid took time to get her something.

Interesting, this confirms that most people think 'wine and chocolate and pens and apples'.
the wine and chocolate thing... hate to break it to you but it's not something that teachers *love*.
Lots of teachers don't drink (strange but true! So I guess be careful who you pick to give wine to) and many teachers get something like 15 boxes of chocolate a year and then don't know what to do with them. It's still appreciated in terms of sentiment though, you just have to accept that it's likely that they won't eat it/drink it all themselves.

Special: ... I'm not saying this to be rude or anything, but if she's just had a baby- she'll probably want to lose weight! Do you have those awesome cheap massage places all over the place like we do here? We've got them in shopping centres all over the city. They have neck massages for AU$5, neck and shoulder $10, and neck shoulder and back $20. They're totally awesome gifts for teachers, and I'd imagine brilliant for a pregnant or brand new mother. I'm sure she'd appreciate chocolates anyway, but I'm just throwing another idea out there.

"It's their job after all." ... Discuss.

Teachers are such a large part of your life, they're teaching you what, 6 or more hours a day, five days a week, for a year. It's not just a 'job'.

Not for Christmas or anything... well, here Christmas and End of School Year are the same thing. So it might make more sense.

Teachers are just glorified baby sitters!!! Hey, thats going to be you one day ;)

Those cheap massage places look kinda dodgy, they always try to pull me in.. Or those people that are like "HI DO YOU WANT LIFE INSURANCE? IF YOU ARE OVER 25 THEN COME HERE"... and i always say "i'm only 18.." then they say "oh i thought you were older".

damnit!

You must have another sort of massage place than we do! Ours look nice. Or maybe we just have different opinions...

glorified babysitters? Okay, from now on all five year olds can teach themselves!

(also babysitters get paid more per child)

I've participated in teacher protests/strikes.
It was for a VERY good reason. Can you imagine a job that hasn't given anyone a raise for 10 years, people keep saying 'but they're so well paid' but they're not, certainly not for the amount of hours and stress involved, and then the government was also trying to take away FIR as part of their deal (where they were going to raise teacher's pay by like, some miniscule percentage that sure didn't match up to inflation), which is this thing where teachers can take a day or two off (someone else goes into the class) so that they can spend some solid Report writing time. Or that all has to happen at home, and it's a huge amount of work. They were like 'yeah we'll raise your pay slightly, but we're taking away FIR then'

They also wanted to cut down on SSO hours, which meant that students who need extra help wouldn't be getting it, AND they were allowing classes to get bigger.

Striking is NOT greed. At all.

Lets be honest though, they do get two weeks off every 10 weeks or so, admit it. They don't do coursework for EVERY day they have off..

A lot of planning goes on in that time. And a lot of sleeping.
Also, since teachers don't get to go home and 'switch off', these breaks are needed so they don't die of stress. So they get a chance to have a bit of an identity other than 'teacher'.

It's their career choice though, It is a well-paid job anyway, much better than some jobs, they're lucky to even have a job!

The teachers I have talked to (that are friends) don't seem to do much "planning" or if they do its maybe 2 or 3 days... it really isn't necessary. AND you would get paid for those hours after work. Think about it, primary school teachers have hardly any hard or difficult homework to correct, they don't need the fortnight off every 10 weeks!

We gave our teacher a mix of rubiks cube and sudoku and when we're ending this term we will give him whiskey glass. It's the same glass that they are using when they are testing new whiskey sort.
