I am looking to buy a smartphone. I would like help deciding which - these are the features I am keen on -
Slide-out keyboard (QWERTY)
Touchscreen
Good internet browsing
Now I was looking at the NOKIA N97 mini but since the disaster of the N96 I am kinda scared to go with Nokia again?
Also the XPERIA x2 I looked at, that seems kinda decent.
Any suggestions? I'm with vodafone and can't really change

thank you very much I will look into this.
Any idea at the moment which is currently the best internet phone around (in any style), excluding the iphone?

Any idea at the moment which is currently the best internet phone around (in any style), excluding the iphone?I'd say the HTC HD2 which is due to be released in the next few weeks. The Opera Mobile browser is very good for browsing. The phone it's self has an enormous screen and is very powerful however it might be a bit too big and does lack a qwerty keyboard.
Best phone including a keyboard without doubt is the HTC Touch Pro 2, got one last month and it's been great :D

Basically, I have to decide between these:
- Sony Erricson XPERIA X2
- Nokia N97 mini
- HTC HD2 (I did want a slide out QWERTY but this looks really nice)
Any input guys?

HD2 looks superb from the videos I've seen of it! None of the horrible windows mobile lag that older phones suffer from and a capacative touchscreen with aparently the best mobile browsing experience on any device (yes better than you iphone!). Like jordy said the size is the only real limiting issue.
I wouldn't go for the N97, it seems really underwhelming. I'd consider the motorola milestone but idk when it comes out! The DEXT is supposed to be pretty nice too

Either an Android device or an iphone.
AVOID BLACKBERRY AND WINDOWS MOBILE AT ALL COSTS.

iPhone = no
I already have one and I don't like the fact there's hardly any settings on it so I don't use it

The Xperia X2 is AWFUL
my brother has it and I can safely say Windows Mobile 6 is officially the worst OS for any phone ever, it can be summed up quite simply by saying slugging and boring, seriously though it can take 1-2 mins to make a phonecall on the X2, god i have alot of hate for that phone.

Looks like it's gonna be a nightmare to get my hands on a HTC HD2 before the 25th of December. Vodafone sold their whole stock in 5 days. I'm hoping they'll get their new batch soon and I'll need to get in there quick or otherwise i'll be looking at January.

Why on earth wouldn't I?
Considering how popular it is I don't think I am going to doubt that it is a brilliant device

It's a beautiful device, I know:)
Windows Mobile is useable, but it's just, not quite there yet, compared to Android, iPhoneOS or even Maemo 5.

Maemo is far from there yet aswell.

The only way in which Windows Mobile isn't "quite there" yet is it's very small (And expensive) Marketplace and how bits of the interface haven't been changed for about 7 years.
It is however very customizable and there's plenty of Custom ROMs. With TouchFLO 3D (All HTC WinMo Touch devices use it) it adds a touchscreen interface and a frankly much better interface on top of Windows Mobile. It's just as good as Android etc with TouchFLO 3D, it's just it lacks a range of applications.

Yes it's definately the HTC I will be going for - I breifly looked at the Vodafone 360 Sumsung H1 as they reccomended it in the vodafone shop
It was made out to be as good if not better as the HTC in the shop however after looking into it online it turns out the Vodafone 360 Samsung H1 is not that great afterall
Next step is trying to get my hands on a HTC HD2 before Christmas. Maybe I could buy it sim-free from amazon -
If I bought it from amazon (sim free) would I be able to put any sim in it? E.g. could I put my vodafone sim with my existing contract in it and would it work?

One word of advice though, don't buy off Amazon they're rather expensive compared to elsewhere.
Clove Technology seems cheapest at £504, my dads bought two phones from them in the past. http://www.clove.co.uk/viewProduct.aspx?Manufacturer=HTC&Item=HTC+HD2&Product=8BD3543E-20C2-425E-AE08-49CDE8188D62&utm_source=google&utm_medium=base&utm_campaign=pound

With HTC phones usually to unlock it you buy an unlock code from eBay, put the foreign SIM card in the phone, and it will ask you for the unlock code.
When you BUY the unlock code from eBay make sure the carrier is the same as the original carrier for the device. They will ask you for the phone's IMEI code, which you can find by dialing *#06#.
After that you can use your new carrier with the phone for calling and SMS. MMS and data (web browsing) wont work until you've reconfigured the APN settings on your device. You can either pay your new carrier to do this for you or you can search around for your carrier's APN settings and do it yourself. Windows Mobile most likely stores this information in an XML file or the registry (yes unfortunately you wont be rid of the Windows registry).

If you buy it unlocked (sim-free) then you won't beed an unlock code :)
It's an expensive way to do things though.

Yeah it is but if you look on the bright side at least your not getting tied into a long contract :D

I bought my HTC phone from eBay, for $250 less than it would of cost to buy directly from HTC. It was off contract, but it was locked in with a Canadian Carrier, Rogers (as I'm Canadian). All I did was pay $6 to an eBayer who gave me an unlock code within the day.
