YouTube video of Chrome OS:

Looks crap for normal desktop PCs tbh, can see it working in the netbook market though.

I'll run it for a week when it comes out.
See how it feels.

I like the look of it. :)
But I love Chrome Browser.

I can see it picking up the new to computer newbies with it's 'simplicity' if I'm honest. Plus Google are the best at everything they do... so watch out MS & Apple.

Google said they were aiming it specifically for the netbook market so I personally think its spot on ^^

This will be an amazing OS for those who haven't got the internet then..

Yeah it'll be riveting for them. Theres stuff for people without internet but I guess theyre aiming for the majority user who do have internet. I bet there will be a reccomendation like "If you lack an internet connection then we reccomend XP on your computer, otherwise Google Chrome OS is the best bet for you". Well I hope so.

It looks mighty awesome though, not my cuppa but if I needed a small laptop on the go then I would fully be up for getting that. I hope you can download applications almost like on their Android store, because that would be a immense feature.

Sure it'd be good but if you are on a worksite and need it quickly, it won't work since you need to connect to the internet >_<

No you wont, you will have to buy a computer with it on, you cannot install it on a normal computer.

Well clearly you wouldn't have a computer with that OS on then.

Looks pretty simple to use, well it was going to be anyway due to it being Google.

I rather not go back to an OS that was made over 3 years ago. :P

Most if not all netbooks have full internet capabilities, they're not just limited to the mobile web:P

What HotelUser said :P Wasn't Vista out 3 years ago? I can't even remember when XP came out, just having one and the first PC to have decent internet access :S

Anyway, Chrome looks interesting... But not for me, the preview just seems a bit bland, but simple and useful for some I guess.

EDIT: It's taken me a few minutes to work out the Canadian flag in your location :P When it's black and white, and that tiny it's not immediately recognisable :P

If I just said 3 years ago, I would of been corrected but since I said "Over". ;)

It's open source. Someone will make a distro that will work on spinning disk drives.

You can download it for testing now. You have to use VMware though.

It's pretty crappy. It's basically just an internet browser. Wouldn't even want it on a netbook tbh.

When web apps become mainstream is when this OS will take off.

All applications are designed to run in a web browser and all the user's data is stored on Google's servers.

i wouldn't like that tbh.

Developers can download the free GWT SDK and create their own web 2.0 apps, so it doesn't have to be stored on Google's servers..

I don't want some of my personal data stored on any computer but my own, these kind of OSs won't take off for this simple reason.

Tried it out in VirtualBox, didn't like it, even if it is early days.

Not really a big fan of this myself either. Not at the moment anyway. :(!

TBH, you all have lots of personal data stored on Google's servers anyway. Most things you've ever done on the internet will be indexed by Google search. If you have a Gmail account then all the personal data you have in emails - passwords etc are stored on Google's servers.

I don't use Gmail for much more than Google related stuff anyway ;)

They also have a function to clear any private data of yours now

It seems a lot of people seem to have caught a terminal case of missed-the-point syndrome. Netbooks up until now have mainly made use of an ancient operating system designed for every computer and its dog which isn't necessarily optimised for the stuff you'd use a netbook for (surfing the net mainly, hence net-book). This OS is made solely for that purpose (you can only install it on SSDs which are mainly employed by netbooks) and has its core feature set and philosophy based around it. It isn't designed to be used on a computer that isn't connected to the internet [which computers aren't these days though?].

For those who say "omg i don't want google to avz ma dataaar omgz", like Nick said they have a great deal of stuff already and chances ae you use a lot of googles services atm anyway between gmail, android phones, google earth etc. If they wanted to they could build up a complete profile of you, hunt you down and kill you right now, but they aren't going to do that. It'll eventually go the way of internet shopping, everyone was like OMGZ DEY RNT AVIN MA CREDIT CARDZ NUMBAZ at first but now it's a lot of peoples' first choice for shopping.

Chrome OS makes perfect sense for anyone who wants a netbook and wants to make use of cloud services so their data can be accessed anywhere. If you want to do anything beyond that, go buy windows 7.

What I don't get is, most netbooks I have seen, and in fact the netbook I am using now, doesn't have an SSD? most still have normal Hard Disks? I only really see the lower Asus models using SSDs, e.g. Asus EEE 901 PC. I use the Asus EEE 1005HA netbook and other netbooks around the same price bracket as mine all have HDs and not SSDs?

I know that lol, but he was saying that it wouldn't be good without the internet to which I replied "Haven't seen many netbooks without mobile internet" implying that your never going to be without the internet on the devices the OS was intended for ;)

Umm it won't be stored on another computer it will be stored on a server like say ummm everything you sign up for on the internet
Most users on the internet have credit cards, home addresses and plenty more info stored on the internet via sites like paypal, amazon and the rest, I would be suprised if that alone scared people off...
I'm sure there were scaremongers back in the day when sites first started suggesting to enter your credit card online.
EDIT: just decided to actually read all the thread and ditto to Alex and Nick

You do realise a server is a computer...

Having card information and addresses aren't that bad, but I wouldn't want more personal things, like family photos, chat logs, etc etc JUST AS AN EXAMPLE stored on another computer.

I meant personal computers, unless of course you host a server on your pc but whatever as it's very unlikely that google has 1000 pc's lined up for there servers, when talking about companys dedi servers hardly anyone refers to them as computers, and also I would rather a picture of me on holiday be leaked on the internet than my credit card info!

Aye, SSDs are just still too expensive to get in any sort of reasonable capacity and people wanted a decent amount of space to put stuff on. Asus had the right idea but they were a few years ahead of everyone else and cloud computing hadn't got nearly the momentum it has now or is likely to have in the next year.

It's easier to block or change credit cards than it is to pull pictures off the internet, just my opinion, yours is fair enough :P`
