Activision exec Tom Tippl has said there are plans to charge Call of Duty fans for online features in future. "It's definitely an aspiration that we see potential in, particularly as we look at different business models to monetise the online gameplay," Tippl said during a business conference (as overheard by IGN (http://uk.pc.ign.com/articles/104/1044979p1.html)). "There's good knowledge exchange happening between the Blizzard folks and our online guys."
"We have great experience also on Call of Duty with the success we had on Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. A lot of that knowledge is getting actually built into the Battle.Net platform and the design of that," he continued.
"I think it's been mutually beneficial, and you should expect us to test and ultimately launch additional online monetisation models of some of some of our biggest franchises like Call of Duty."
But isn't Tippl worried COD fans will object to having to cough up more money? Not a bit: "Our gamers are telling us there's lots of services and innovation they would like to see that they're not getting yet," he said.
"From what we see so far, additional content, as well as all the services Blizzard is offering, is that there is demand from the core gamers to pay up for that."

If this works out for Activision then most other companies will follow.

That's bad to be honest, bleeding us dry. Blizzard are like WoW and stuff, but idealy, the monthly subscription fee WoW charges is for the game. We buy a £45 game and the multiplayer is a feature, not something for us to be charged for and they want more? Additional content is ok to be charged for I guess, but to be allowed to play? That seems a bit unfair.

If they do implement charges i can gurantee 80% of the fanbase will be gone, Monthly charges are for MMORPG's not FPS

They wouldn't do that unless they make there own console.

Xbox live costs they wouldn't make it cost for CoD online too.. That's just stupid

PS3 Is going to be charged a fee for online stuff to so they wouldn't do that on PS3 Either

PC they might. Unless you buy the multiplayer only package

£45 for the game was a rip off, let alone more for the online features.

and Jord, PS3 isn't going to charge for online play, but some services (not yet released) will not be free, for example, bits of home aren't anyway.

this and... they do realise when he said "our gamers ask for additional content" that is for nazi zombies and more maps, not to pay for what we've already payed for (for xbox's live) ps3 can pay all they want they don't charge there users for internet, but xbox already does.

PS3 doesn't charge because when a developer wants to put content on a game they have to pay Sony for the hosting costs rubbish.
