Laptop for uni?

Hey, Im having trouble picking a laptop for uni.
Im going on to study a masters in computer science next year sometime so id like any suggestions on suitable (preferably not too expensive) laptops :)

Whats the point? Students don't exactly have money to burn, and paying over the odds for a label and a different operating system is just unworthy. Get a NetBook, I suggest the Asus EEE 1005HA, great laptop, I have one, bought it three months ago and it's a beast for school work and what not. Only £200 on Amazon at the moment to, so get one whilst they are cheap.

I agree with Stefan's choice if you want a netbook

Whats the laptop for?
Take around uni for some quick notes and web surfing?
Desktop Replacement / main pc?
Does it need battery life and portability? or processing power / gfx capability's?

For a netbook, I would highly recommend the Samsung NC10 (old but still one of the best) great battery life, good size keyboard and generally great
Where as for a laptop I would go for a Toshiba any of them are good (great for everything!)

NC10 looks nice, I had the choice between that or my new Asus, the main thing that swerved it was easily upgradable and battery life (10 hours), and the looks.

The NC10 is getting a bit old now, there is a new version of it out but I forget the model number.

If you're studying a masters in Computer Science, then for the love of God, stick with Windows.

I would agree with the Toshiba laptop statement. I have a Toshiba (Satellite L40-137) laptop and I must say it is very durable because I have dropped it a few times onto concrete which made a nasty dent on the corner. I also dropped it from the top a of a bunk-bed onto the floor screen side down I believe and the laptop still to this day is working. It is also just over 2 years old (purchased on the 29th June 2007).

Walk into any of my lectures and you'll see just how recession-proof Apple have been.

I wasn't on about the recession, I was talking about students in general, most are skint and have to take out loans before they even get their. Getting a Mac for Uni is just unnecessary in my opinion. Unless its a graphics/video editing course or something that would benefit from having a Mac.

Saying that when I'm older and have a job I'll almost definitely at some point buy a Mac of some sorts. :P

If this laptop is going to be your primary computer at uni then don't get a netbook. Get a "normal" sized laptop. The performance benefits and extra screen size etc. If you have a desktop alreay that you'll be taking then a netbook is ideal.

No. Pen and paper FTW.

The maybe one or two people on one in the lecture end up on FaceBook anyway. Wi-Fi absolutely everywhere in our building.

Honestly, it's better on pen and paper.

Without making a sound except from tapping away on your keyboard? That drives me insane when someone has a laptop in the lecture - the constant "tap, tap, tap"

It is mainly pen and paper (even in Computer Science courses). Research about future modules to help decide on which laptop you should go for and what would suit your needs to the best aquirement.
