I downloaded the .swf file for a game I play online, and saved it in my PC. That's all fine. Loads through IE, no problem.

The game I downloaded had no built-in facility to save your progress, so is this possible at all with any other methods?

Probably not since I would presume the savegame progress would be stored on the website server that you play it on.

If the game didn't have any programming in it for the ability to save your progress, then you would have to reprogram it.

There was never a savegame process to be honest.

I wondered if there was a way to save the .swf file in it's current state (what I mean is something a bit like sleep mode on a PC), or something similar.

Never close it? :P

Nah I don't have a better idea than that!

LOL I'd thought about never closing it, but that wouldn't work as I often boot up and shut down.
