View Full Version : 30,000 Internet Users to Receive File-Sharing Cash Demands

As many as 25,000 BT and 5,000 customers of other ISPs will be receiving shock letters demanding big payments during the coming weeks. Lawyers in the UK have been granted more court orders which force ISPs to hand over the details of individuals who they say have been monitored sharing hardcore pornography.

Thoughts? BBC reports it as 30,000 and music sharing. ACS Law and Davenport Lyons make me lol.
If I'd have used BitTorrent, which I don't, and got one of these letters I would of just laughed at it and binned it. They are just relying on a percentage of people giving in and paying up - would mean a healthy return on sending out a few letters. Highly doubt they plan even attempting to follow up any letters and if they did they would have a extremely hard time proving anything.

LOL hardcore porno? Red you tube ftw... ;P Are they using this as an excuse to get details?
As for downloading, I've not downloaded from torrents for a long time.
Likewise. Assuming your using SSL with your Usenet connection there would be no reason for anyone to even attempt to request your details from a Usenet provider as they can't show that you've been downloading anything that you should be (Because we all use Usenet for those Linux ISO images!)
Also as long as your with a good Usenet provider (e.g Astraweb) that does not log anything you access there will be no proof at all, from your ISP or Usenet provider. The only evidence will be on your computer, which there would be no reason anyone would want to gain access to as there is no proof that you've done anything wrong.

I barely use torrents, and have never downloaded any porn so i wont be expecting a letter. Stupid idea though, if they do follow up the letters, they can expect to pay alot in court fees.

That has to be the only sentence on the internet that is impossible to believe :P You could tell me aliens abducted my mother and exchanged for a cake and I'd believe you more than if you said that!

They only rely on people crappin them selves to pay up cos it would cost them more to prove they have and to pay for a lawyer.
If I get 1 Ill just throw it away :)
And remember KIDS, when you're downloading, make sure you use PeerGuardian 2!
Lew.
30,000 out of however many millions of people download in the uk? the chances of you being fined are very slim lol

Everyone downloads porn, and I've seen your collection that time I snuck in for food ;) You can't escape :P
As everyone seems to say anyway, it would be difficult for them to actually do this. If anything, it would be the ones that abuse the system the most, but these people who do probably have the brains to make sure they're not caught.
Speaking of which, does PeerGuardian 2 work again? It used to not want to work years ago - on most PCs it was installed on, it would refuse to update itself.

Lmao I'd be way too scared to download porn. I get nervous of viruses when downloading music! Why is porn illegal anyway.. it's not like pirating when you download music :S

PeerGuardian is completely useless and if you use it and think it's actually stopping those people at the corps from slapping you with charges and such, you are sadly mistaken.

Porn itself is not illegal*, however a lot of it is copyrighted like music/movies... the porn then gets sold but some people will distribute it like movies/music, hence piracy.
*some porn is illegal

o2 Home access fails lol they tried traffic management which failed then they TRIED to just switch off torrents and usenet completely and failed at that because you can just change the port and your back on.

Sorry but whatever your router says isn't what your actually getting. Your router is syncing with the exchange at that rate but your actual throughput will be considerably less.
Take mine for example:
Router:
Bandwidth (Up/Down) [kbps/kbps]:448 / 8,128 - That's showing that my router is syncing with the exchange at full speed.
Speedtest:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/644109158.png
BT Speedtester:
Download speed achieved during the test was - 2311 Kbps
For your connection, the acceptable range of speeds is 600-7150 Kbps.
Additional Information:
Your DSL Connection Rate :8128 Kbps(DOWN-STREAM), 448 Kbps(UP-STREAM)
IP Profile for your line is - 7150 Kbps
