Okay first off if this is the wrong section and it gets moved can a MOD plz pm me telling me where its moved to ?
Also kk basically i was wondering if lets say you did something online and made fun of someone on a website and then your school found out. Are the staff aloud to search your IP or trace you / can they ? (is it possible?)
I don't think they can unless the police are involved and even then they need a warrant? Btw i live in Canada if thats helpful.

I think they would deffinately need to get the police involved. Especially if the thing wasnt in school at all, since then it has nothing to do with them. At least in the UK i think that's right.

They cant track an IP themselves, but if they think its serious enough and the police are involved, the police can track an IP (I think)
Okay i thought so aswell thx

I assume, the will need the police to get involved, but they'd need a warrant.
They'd then most likely go to your ISP, and ask them who was using this IP at this time if dynamic etc.
But I don't think the police can do it themselves. Even CEOP go to the Police.

I have actually lmao :P but i cant seem to find anything helpful if they can find out my IP or not and if they have grounds to.
Also @Stephen its a big issue about cyber bullying and stuff even though im in high school they make a big deal about it. We were just joking for the fun of it nothing serious but i guess they took it the wrong way.

Fights against cyber bullying are about as pointless as the pointless crap the persons bullying with.
well it was a freewebs guestbook
and i read the terms and stuff it costs 50$ per 1 IP you want to find out if ur with the law or a school offical so i doubt there gonna pay thta for every person cuz theres about 200 comments lmao

I hardly think your school would take it that far to find who it really is via the IP Address. The Police will most likely say its wasting their time if its nothing "serious" at all.
Thats basically what i've been saying(to my friends) and the Principal is just saying he'll do IP checks as a threat which he really can't do. I don't think they'll bring it that far either as it really isn't that bad. Pretty much i think my friends are just gonna deny everything when they get called in and it will eventually be dropped.

Good thing there are no incrimating postings on the public interweb that could easly be found through a basic google search...
...
Uh oh... (http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla%3Aen-GB%3Aofficial&hs=HQ8&q=basically+i+was+wondering+if+lets+say+you+did+so mething+online+and+made+fun+of+someone+on+a+websit e+and+then+your+school+found+out+habbox+&btnG=Search&meta=&aq=f&oq=)
The ability to trace ip's to a person is somewhat more fictional that most think. Assuming you used a public pc in the school, Useing there leet skills of ip traceing, they may discover such enlightening facts such as ip being used by the school...
Wasnt a school computer was a 1s used at home

The chances of the subpoena the IP of the isp are pretty minimal (and are supposed to require a court order) Then that tells them whos internet connection it was. That limits it to the household, and if the networks secure, any computer literate person who comes within wifi range, and if its unsecured, pretty much anyone whos ever been near your house with a laptop o.0
thats very smart i didnt think about that wifi thing which would be a last resort excuse

It would take time and it would be a waste of time for your school and the ISP to be honest. It was probably not even serious, have they said anything else since?
well apparently the vice principal said if no one admits to it its gonna be reported to the police but i rly doubt he is ithink its just talk
