BBC Sport - Football - Richard Dunne critical of Fifa award for Republic (http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport2/hi/football/internationals/8396902.stm)

Republic of Ireland defender Richard Dunne said talk of Fifa giving his side a special award following their World Cup exit was "taking the mickey".

"It's taking the mickey - give the Irish a plaque instead of going to the World Cup. It's a sop."

"It doesn't affect me one little bit what Fifa will do with Thierry Henry," Dunne said.

"Whether he plays in the World Cup or not, I won't be. Whatever Fifa do will probably be wrong anyway.

"From the moment the rules were changed for the play-offs, when the seedings were brought in, it was decided they wanted France through.

"It's always the same way Fifa think about Irish football. Unless you are a massive country or have massive sponsorship you're not going to be welcome."

"I would be very surprised if Robbie Keane, our captain, was going over to collect it."

A plaque instead of a world cup placement!? Are FIFA actually taking the pish??

well yesterday a west brom player handballed the ball into the back of the net to equalise against derby. we haven't gone to the football league asking for the match to be replayed, an extra playoff position or the player to be banned for the rest of the season.

aye, but theres a big difference between a championship league game and a world cup qualifying playoff!

Hernann Hredairsson also said that it wasn't a penalty. Why didn't he say to the ref it wasn't a pen?

Think the same happened with Arshavin last year, but he said to the ref that it wasn't a pen and I'm sure it still got given

Wish these irish ***** would just shut the **** up about it now. Getting embarrassing. Well, actually - it was embarrassing when they asked for a replay, then asked to be included.

Yeah that's exactly the same. Well done. :eusa_clap

Yeah he denied a penalty which would have been awarded to him. I'm pretty sure the ref didn't give him it either in the end.

Arshavin actually said to the ref it wasn't but it was still given. Hredairsson did nothing during the game then said it wasn't a pen after.

Refs hate to get told there wrong. That's why protesting after a goal or penalty is given is really pointless as it hardly ever leads to anything.

I think that they should do what they do in Tennis and Cricket sometimes. The captain gets to call for 3 replays a match and only 3. If he wastes it, he wastes it. That way, the captain has more responsibility and if the players swarm the ref, then the ref should be able to say it's upto your captain to ask for a replay or not. Might be a stupid idea but I like it :P

I do admire Terry for the Chelsea game, he was the only digified Chelsea player there. The rest acted poorly. Even when the Adebayor goal was scored (2nd one), Terry told everyone else to go away and he went to speak with the ref.

The plaque.. well what a stupid thing to do. FIFA are admitting that Ireland got cheated out of a place but won't do anything constructive about it.

well essentially it is the same thing. say if for some miracle derby were 1 point off from the playoffs (or going to get relegated), then it IS the same thing.

Yeah but they weren't :S You can't compare the two until that situation you said above happens and even then, it's the 100,000 Derby supporters or so compared to the Millions of Irish people so no it's not the same thing at all.

i meant in the future, say if we, in the future, miss out this season because of that.

lol, why should it matter the amount of fans who support which team? That's what the controversy is with already, with france with more supporters than ireland?

i only meant it in jest. I think it's ridiculous the ref didn't see it but i don't really care, the atmosphere was great and it was great with all the excitement! i don't honestly think that the player should be banned or whatever, it just happens in football and im saying that ireland should just let it go. I'd be really annoyed if it happened to england, but nothing's gonna change so stop moaning ireland.

There needs to be standard procedures which allow for certainty. Allowing the irish a replay or even letting them into the cup would mean any future similar cases, no matter how small, would feel they could too appeal. At the end of the day, it's happened, the fact is no matter who it happened to, i doubt it would be any different. And i'm pretty sure theres a few small countries with no huge sponsorships in the world cup this time.

Stop feeling sorry for yourselves irish, it's happened.

yeah but it didn't cause we're good enough to be at the world cup sans playoffs - there would have been an uproar but it'd have died down by now.
