Right, ive got kinda confused here :P

Did a CPU-Z and got the following results:

AM2 (940) socket type, so I assume these lots of processors will work in my PC?

http://www.ebuyer.com/search?store=2&cat=230&subcat=1960 (Says 940 in the details)

But these also show as working with AM2 boards too - http://www.ebuyer.com/search?store=2&cat=230&subcat=2452

Slightly confusing me, just need clarification what ones will actually work, and how hard it would be to fit a new CPU into the PC, heatsink has always been a pain to remove for me :P

AM2/3 boards are backwards compatible I do believe, I hope someone can clarify that, don't really keep up with AMD goings on.

Is this the one your talking about - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/128510

I was going to go for the Phenom x4 2.5ghz - http://www.ebuyer.com/product/170183

But would the Athlon be better? I have no idea about AMD processors :P

Also what cooler and heatsink would you then recommend for it as its going to be OEM.

Do you know what board you have? It's probably fairly old considering the CPU you have now. As far as I'm aware it's just AM2+ that's compatible with AM3 CPUs but maybe someone can confirm that the older AM2 boards are?

Either is going to be an improvement over what you have (if it's compatible).

I recently upgraded my old X2 5200 2.7GHZ to one of these http://www.ebuyer.com/product/173368 and it works great in my AM2+ board. The lack of L3 cache is disappointing, but benchmarks show it performs about 95% of the Phenom II (with the L3 cache) at the same clock speed. It overclocks reasonably well for an AMD CPU as well.

Socket is AM2 (940) not sure if its AM2+, or are AM2 and AM2+ the same?

I need one that fits my board, if you can find a x4 one that does then I will get that one.
