Adapted from my Film Blog:

My personal top ten of the best and worst films of the decade. As the hours are shrinking still towards Christmas and 2009 edges closer to the beginning of a new decade, not only have I questioned just how fast these last ten years have gone, but I have also thought extremely hard about the films that have both pleased and truly repulsed me the most since the millennium kicked off. Now, in no particular order, let’s begin…

The Top 10 Best Films of the Decade

No Country for Old Men (2007, written and directed by Joel and Ethan Coen)

The Departed (2006, written by William Monahan and Alan Mak [screenplay] and Felix Chong [original screenplay for Mou Gaan Dou/Infernal Affairs, 2002], directed by Martin Scorsese)

Cache (Hidden) (2005, written and directed by Michael Haneke)

Kill Bill (2003, written and directed by Quentin Tarantino)

Oldboy (2003, written by Jo-yun Hwang, Chun-hyeong Lim, Joon-hyung Lim and Chan-wook Park [screenplay] and Nobuaki Minegishi [graphic novel], directed by Chan-wook Park)

Lost in Translation (2003, written and directed by Sofia Coppola)

Inglourious *******s (2009, written and directed by Quentin Tarantino)

Sin City (2005, written by Robert Rodriguez [screenplay] and Frank Miller [graphic novels], directed by Robert Rodriguez and Frank Miller)

Mulholland Drive (2001, written and directed by David Lynch)

El Labertino del Fauno (Pan’s Labyrinth) (2006, written and directed by Guillermo del Toro)

The Top 10 Worst Films of the Decade

Disaster Movie (2008, written and directed by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer)

10,000 B.C. (2008, written by Roland Emmerich and Harald Kloser, directed by Roland Emmerich)

The Happening (2008, written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan)

Son of the Mask (2005, written by Lance Khazei, directed by Lawrence Guterman)

Prom Night (2008, written by J.S. Cardone, directed by Nelson McCormick)

The Adventures of Pluto Nash (2002, written by Neil Cuthbert, directed by Ron Underwood)

One Missed Call (2008, written by Andrew Klavan [screenplay] and Minako Daira [adapted screenplay for Chakushin Ari, 2003] and Yasushi Akimoto [novel], directed by Eric Valette)

The Hottie & the Nottie (2008, written by Heidi Ferrer, directed by Tom Putnam)

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009, written by Ehren Kruger, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, directed by Michael Bay)

All I can say is, 2008 was an utterly awful year for cinema.

I must give a couple of honourable mentions to two of my guilty pleasures that will probably be making the rounds on many folks’ worst films of the decade lists this Christmas, White Chicks and Christmas with the Kranks.

What are your own personal top 10 favourite flicks and cinematic repulsions from 2000-2009? GO.

I'm surprised you're even able to make such a list! I'd find it difficult and would probably have to think about it for ages but I imagine I haven't watched any way near as many as you so it should be much easier for me. Not to mention I don't have a clue what years things were made :P. Oh and I hate White Chicks so much!!!

Inseriousity.
12-12-2009, 10:47 AM
'The Hottie and the Nottie' LOL what a title. Not seen it though, looks like I shouldn't but still that's just 'Funniest Title of the year' at least :P

I don't know many films to make a list either but as I love harry potter, that's automatically in my top 10 regardless of how stupid the film was!

As for worst film, Don't mess with the Zohan has to be in there. Ridiculous and that's time I will never get back! :(

Misawa
12-12-2009, 12:03 PM
A lot of people despised Don't Mess with the Zohan. I'm not a fan of Adam Sandler in comedy aside from Little Nicky, and Zohan looked awful, so I haven't seen it.

hah

i though that movie was so good and funny i also loved these ones that where on your bad list lol

The Happening (2008, written and directed by M. Night Shyamalan)

Prom Night (2008, written by J.S. Cardone, directed by Nelson McCormick)

The Hottie & the Nottie (2008, written by Heidi Ferrer, directed by Tom Putnam)

Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen (2009, written by Ehren Kruger, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman, directed by Michael Bay)

I loved Transformers but Prom Night was god awful lol. My friend and I rented it and just spent the whole film laughing at how ridiculously bad it was.

Black_Apalachi
12-12-2009, 12:38 PM
I have to agree that Transformers 2 was shamefully bad. The first one was probably as bad but I don't remember watching it, wasn't at the cinema at least.

Some of my better ones would have to include Peter Jackson's King Kong, Watchmen, The Dark Knight, Iron Man and District 9. That last one is so underrated in my opinion.

Misawa
12-12-2009, 12:41 PM
Even for a remake, Prom Night was especially terrible - probably the worst I have ever seen. Nothing happens, the editing is so off, there's no continuity, the performances suck, the script sucks. There is literally not a single thing good about that film.

It was difficult to make the list for the best films, but not the worst. I could not believe when I looked back just how many truly awful films came out in 2008.

Accipiter

personally i loved lost in translation when watching it media studies, others were saying they couldn't follow the story line o_o i was like i understood the whole film?

Misawa
12-12-2009, 12:47 PM
The people that couldn't understand Lost in Translation seem like they don't know a good story when they're told one.

If people can't decide on the best films of the decade, give just one film if it's easier. It took me a while to choose my top ten best.

You can read the full blog entry here. (http://wwfe.wordpress.com/2009/12/12/the-top-10-best-and-worst-films-of-the-decade/)

Phillip Schofield just informed me that his favourite film of the decade is Harry Brown (eek), and his least favourite is Couples Retreat. Random.

I agree, I really enjoyed lost in translation, seems everyone did. However I didn't really think slumdog millionaire lived up to the hype people were giving it - it was average imo. Quite a good list as well although District 9 and Babel would have made it into mine, I agree with your choices.

clueless
12-12-2009, 03:53 PM
you see im really fussy with films and i went into the cinema expect to be disappointed by slumdog millionaire because of the hype
but for me it did live up to it i just loved it!!

Misawa
12-12-2009, 04:46 PM
Slumdog Millionaire left a bad taste in my mouth because of how I feel about Danny Boyle as a person, and the film was built as some kind of strictly independent film, which wasn't the case at all. It was good, but nothing more in my eyes. As for District 9, I found it decent, but it didn't live up to the hype.

I think the Dark Knight deserves a spot on the list, an iconic film in so many ways.

It'd take me a long while to make such a list, seen too many films to make an opinion on what should/n't be on there.

Mudholland drive is an interesting pick, I guess your in that camp rather than the Donnie Darko one?

Misawa
12-12-2009, 05:31 PM
I can't say how many thousands of films I've seen since 2000, but it's easier than you may think to come up with a top ten list.

The Dark Knight is grossly overrated in my opinion.

Donnie Darko is indeed a good film, but I feel that Mulholland Dr. towers above it.

Neversoft
12-12-2009, 05:44 PM
Good list, although I believe The Departed is incredibly overrated.

My list would be something like this...

The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (2001 - 2003, directed by Peter Jackson)

Into The Wild (2007, directed by Sean Penn)

Oldboy (2003, directed by Chan-wook Park)

District 9 (2009, directed by Neill Blomkamp)

Letters From Iwo Jima (2006, directed by Clint Eastwood)

Spirited Away (2001, directed by Hayao Miyazaki)

The Incredibles (2004, directed by Brad Bird)

Gladiator (2000, directed by Ridley Scott)

Shaun of the Dead (2004, directed by Edgar Wright)

Big Fish (2003, directed by Tim Burton)

Twilight

Harry Potter, 3rd movie onwards

St. Trinians

Click - I love Adam Sandler movies but this was just awful

There is probably tons more worst but I can't think of any at this moment in time.

A couple of my favourites have to be The Last Samurai and The Departed, both have great stories.

As for worst film, anything like Meet The Spartans just annoys me.

Why is this misawa? Why is this?

Because that movie is beyond "worst" I think, that's probably the sort of movie that would be dumped into a black hole to test what really happens to it.

Misawa
16-12-2009, 12:16 AM
It's one of those films that just should not have been made in principle before it was ever thought. I haven't watched a single episode in my life, but I've seen enough clips and whatnot to know that you can't make the transition between animation and live-action and make it feel like you're watching a feature adaptation. It only made $10M over his budget.

Neil
16-12-2009, 12:22 AM
I think the only film I can think of that is worse than the Dragonball movie can be "Carrie" or however it's spelt, that is the worst movie I've seen in my life.

Favourite is lord of the rings and scary movie series.

Least favourite.. Meet the spartans, 10,000BC & epic or disaster movie forgot which is which now.

Carrie? That's a GREAT horror movie.

I hope that's sarcasm, Carrie would of better fitted "accidently comedy", I laughed the whole time, the acting was just bad all over, I did quite like the plot but the presentation made me wanna poke my eyes out.

Misawa
16-12-2009, 12:51 AM
Directed by the legendary Brian De Palma and adapted from a Stephen King novel - it's one of those most famous and critically acclaimed horror films of all time, with one of the most infamous and parodied scenes in cinema history. Sissy Spacek is fantastic in the title role. You weren't watching The Rage: Carrie 2, by any chance?

Woah, Click was hardly one of the worst films this decade. It wasn't an amazing film, but it was a great performance from Adam Sandler and despite its initial comedic start it really managed to portray great emotion later on. Adam's best performance still remains Reign Over Me, but Click is up there.

Click is one of the worst for me, I really disliked it, the trailers did what they do and made it look really, really good but the end product was not what I was expecting and didn't live up to what I was expecting, Bedtime Stories was even better that Click for me and that wasn't that great either.

I thought it was awful, could just be my massive disliking for horror movies though. xD

Worst films of the decade:

-Disaster Movie, Epic Movie, Superhero Movie and any other of these silly parodies of films which are meant to be funny but aren't (except maybe Scary Movie)
-Mamma Mia
-The Strangers
-One Missed Call
-Alvin & The Chipmunks (The second one looks just as bad if not worse)
-The Saw films
-The Blair Witch Project (still within the decade - was released 1999)
-Napoleon Dynamite
-Paranormal Activity
-Any Fast & The Furious films (only watch them for the cars)

It's VERY hard to pick out films from the last decade for me.

Zombieland was good from this year.
Just about anything Tarantino has been good, Inglourious was immense.
This is England.
The Day After Tomorrow was alright, but no more "disaster"movies have been as good as it in my opinion.
Monsters Inc.
There'll be so many more, but just can't think of them.

There have been some dire films, Orphan from this year springs to mind, as well as Hulk from 2003.
Plus, the Saw series should have only been a one-off. All of them from II onwards have been awful.
