How often do you think you should and why?

How often do you buy a new one and why?

Edit: The reason why I made this thread is because ive had my laptop about 1 year and 2 months and its starting to slow down, ive tried many things such as updating ram, removing unwanted programs, disk cleanup, disk defragment and basically everything. (Any tips to speed it up please add)

Is my laptop ready for the bin?

I have never bought one tbh. This is the only laptop I've had really which I've had for a couple of years and my mum got it free with a phone contract or something.

I would say 12 months - 16 months to be honest. But with my current one, I will just be upgrading the parts when I need to etc. :P

My custom built is coming up to 2 years this Christmas, all I need to do is upgrade the graphics card. :P

I don't buy complete PC's, but I will list how often I usually upgrade the components;

CPU - Every 2 Years
Motherboard - Every 2 Years
RAM - Every 2 Years
PSU - Every 2 Years
GPU - Every 6-8 Months

well mine usually last me a good 3 years i'd hope. if you buy a pc as little as £100 more then usually the extra power you get will future-proof you for another couple of years = more value for money.

Every 3 years. Why waste money buying a PC every year when you can buy an above average one and have it last for years? This one two years old I think, coming up to three in August. Never really had a problem with slow down syndrome so never felt the need to get a new one. If anything, this will need a RAM upgrade, but the HDD is fine, the CPU is fine and the Graphics Card is fine.

So same as Stutoman I guess

The PC I built last year is now 1 year old and I may consider some upgrades during the next year, although unless I have extra cash around that probably won't be the case. As long as it works and performs well, I don't really see the point in getting a new one or upgrading any components, if it isn't essential.

My laptops have each lasted over a year, with my current one lasting over a year and it still has a long time left in it (running XP on it makes it seem faster).

My tower upstairs (which is mainly used to store things on) is about 5 years old for certain parts (motherboard) but i've bought a new harddrive for it not long ago (350GB).

I just keep updating/upgrading, but I say a complete cycle of new parts every 3 years or so.

I usually replace my laptop every 3 years roughly (well, replace as in they need so many parts the Whatever Happens plan just sends a voucher for a new one.)

As for a desktop, I've never actually bought one. I got one for Christmas one year (2001, and it was WINDOWS 98), and inherited our old desktop in 2005.

I generally think around 16-20 months, mostly because computer capabilities double every 18 months.

Addressing the slow computer, reinstall the operating system. If you want to make your computer faster then that's the first step, I reinstall every 3-6 months.

I had my old pc from January 2006 until a few months ago when I built this beast and bought my macbook.

I generally prefer to run it until I can no longer do what I do - infact my friend now has my old pc so seldom do I think I need to get this by this, unless it breaks.

New one every 4/5 years or so, if it lasts till then anyway. Don't see the need in buying a new one all the time, will replace parts if needed whenever though.

Currently i seem to add 1-2 pc's each year, though theses are generally old ones i picked up cheap. I don't do a proper upgrade of my main pc (other than component changes) more than once every 3 or so years - not much of a gamer, so past-gen tech serves me well :)

(Lots of older pc's > 1 top end pc) for my use's ... its also cheaper

I just replace parts in my PC as and when I have the funds :P Replaced everything in it but the motherboard, CPU and RAM which I'm going to upgrade all together. Gonna keep the water cooling and case because they're pretty awesome, even if it does say packard bell on the front in big letters!

My custom PC I will just upgrade whenever really. Next planned BIG upgrade in 2 and a bit years.

Big being updating: MoBo, CPU, RAM, GPU, PSU

I think about buying a new one every 12 months, but I normally actually buy one every year and a half. Probably.

I upgrade as and when I want/need to. Could be a few months, could be a few years.
