Make your own shakes (no buts here), the ones you can buy are massively overpriced and contain junk, protein bars usually suck, check the nutritional info, these are also usually overpriced.
To make your own shake, buy a quality protein powder. You can get a very good quality and low price bulk pack of Whey Protein Concentrate (80%+ protein, just powdered whey from the cheese making process, contains a very small amount of carbs and fat too) or Whey Protein Isolate (95% ish protein, almost no carbs or fat, like 0.1g per 30g and the lactose has been removed for people who are lactose intolerant), Isolate is higher quality but 5lb pack of isolate costs almost £10 more than the same amount of concentrate, from Myprotein.co.uk
Click for Concentrate: http://www.myprotein.co.uk/bulk-powders/protein-powders/impact-whey-protein/
Isolate:http://www.myprotein.co.uk/bulk-powders/protein-powders/impact-whey-isolate/
Mix with water or milk, tastes fine. Flavoured ones are good but a quid or so more expensive. For a 5% discount use this code: MP181659
Thanks!
Edit: To answer your main question, they do work but protein powder isn't a miracle - your diet and workout are more important. It certainly is very useful though and if you otherwise can't get enough protein (which a lot of people can't) then it's pretty awesome. It's perfectly healthy but getting protein from wholefood (e.g chicken, beef) is always better.
