View Full Version : AMD Noob
I'm about to step in foreign teritory; I'm thinking about AMD.
Some of you may have seen my last thread about making a flight sim. I did choose Intel because of my confident knowledge of it.
Although, I've been moaned at I can get a much better deal with AMD.
At the moment, I had
- Intel Core 2 Quad Q8300 2.5ghz > £101.50
- Asus P5Q-E P45 mobo > £95.94
---------
£197.44
Could I get a better deal or higher spec with AMD?
Also, I'll be using an NVidia GTX 260
Many Thanks

To be honest, the way I see it; Intel is for high performance and AMD is budget performance.
NOTE: THIS IS MY OWN OPINION, DO NOT FLAME ME.

Hmm, fair doos, I'll see what others say ;p

Get a decent cooler on there and overclock.
You would need DDR3 RAM though.

AMD Phenom II is the way to go. You don't really need an expensive motherboard.
CPU: Phenom II 955, 3.2GHz Black Edition AM3

Motherboard: Asus M4A785TD-V EVO Socket AM3

The motherboard could be changed for any really. Most ASUS boards at whatever price are pretty good.
EDIT: Regarding Nick's post: You could also upgrade the CPU to the 965, you won't see much difference though. Also, you can overclock but you will need an aftermarket cooler.
Thanks to the above, and I decided to get these

Indeed, they will work. The CPU cooler should cope with some overclocking.

IF I DID overclock, it'd probobly only be to 3.5-4.0 nothing over 4, think it'll cope?
