Alright well i'm just debating on setting up a forum or not. I'm pretty confident i can get a decent amount of users over time, but i'm unsure on costs.

I'll probably start out with a free forum software rather the vBulletin though.

You must plan before you create, that's what I did to ForumBuddy...

Forum software - Can range from nothing to about £150, you need to consider what you really need and your budget. The forum could fail and you give up having wasted a lot of money, or you could start up free and upgrade to a paid forum when you feel it's going well

Hosting - You generally don't need much space really as most forums store most things in a database, so hosting can be pretty cheap, the main thing you're looking for is bandwidth

It depends how much you're willing to put in, you could spend loads but not have a unique idea so your forum just goes nowhere.

Good luck with whatever you choose to do

I would say if you are looking at having members you need to avoid oversold shared hosting like the plague. As iJoe says forum's generally rely on a database and if thats slow, your board is slow.

Webhosting, Domain = £25 yearly? (average)

Forum software = As ijoe has said, they range from nothing to £150, But most free forum software are actually AS GOOD as the expensive ones.

Marketing = Think how your gonna market the forum. Are you gonna have a marketing budget? All things you need to think about.

Can be as low as £2 a month to over £300 a month.
I started off at £2 a month and went to £300 within a year. But my VIP's easily payed that off.

You'll need a good £80-£100 if you're looking to promote this well.

But the thing is not how much money you put into it, it's all about what's it about. You can have the crappest idea and put millions into it, or have a unique idea and put a few quid.
