Drug help.

Okay, My front two teeth are sensitive and when I bite they hurt. Its just came on and with a bit of googling I've found there may be an infection beneath the root of the tooth. It was advised to get anti-biotics. Here is the thing, last time I had an ulcer infection in my mouth I was prescribed Amoxicillin, an infection fighting drug. The dentist is closed for Christmas and I cant get to one but I have some Amoxicillin left downstairs. Would it be alright for me to take this to try and get rid of the infection?

I wouldn't take anything untill you for sure know, and also there must be some emergency dental place i know there are around where i live.

I don't think you should take the amoxicillin.. It's honestly never a good idea to take non-prescribed medication. You never know what could happen, especially if it isn't the right medication you need. Instead try to get ahold of some over the counter medication that might help - like bonjela as hackney mentioned. Or just simply get some pain relievers (in the US we have tylenol and advil, not sure what major brands you have in the UK but basically just some type of ibuprofen or acetaminophen to help reduce the pain if its that bad), and then try to get to a dentist as soon as they're open. You might be able to find some sort of emergency dental place like Arch mentioned somewhere near you.. It may be a bit of a drive, but if its hurting that badly you should make the trip.

My friend who is a medical student said it is not recommended but if it was prescribed to you last time for a similar cause and your in urgent need to pain relief then take it. Dentist and Doctor is closed until after New Year. I took some and the pain is slowly subsiding.

NHS Direct, they are the only ones who will know tbh. Not worth the risk.

to be honest amoxicilin is fairly low-risk (and strength) medication, I had 2 x 1 week courses for an ear infection, and it didn't work :( But I probably would take it if the pain got any worse (coz I also have some left overs)

NHS Direct don't know their bottom from their elbow! Although they are your best bet. && NEVER SELF DIAGNOSE WITH THE INTERNET! You may have a stomach ache && think it's cancer. It's full of hypochondriacs.

The important questions are..
- Do you have any facial swelling? If so is it 'cause your eye to close? Or spreading down onto your neck? Or is it affecting your breathing?
- Also is there any blood? How bad is it? Is it it constant? Has it not stopped after 30 mins of continuous biting on a clean piece of material?
- Any trauma?

I'm not a nutcase, I used to work for a company who sort out the Out of Hours Doctors && Dentists in West Yorkshire.
