Mine was the curious case of Benjamin button

Probably The Inside Man even though it was released in 06?

Oh was this thread first? Benjamin Button was pretty good I thought. It hit home on the emotional side anyway. Mine would be either Watchmen, District 9 or Avatar.

it was indeed.
I would say Avatar for an '09 release.

Inglourious *******s, by a clear mile, and that's a certifiably non-biased opinion.

The films this year were just awful in my opinion.
2012 was bad, but for some reason I just loved it. :P

The Hangover, pure brilliance :)

either the hangover or district 9, more edging towards district 9 because it was the main characters (wikus) first performace on screen, and he was amazing. paranormal activity was great too, but i find i enjoy comedy and drama much more than horrors.
Inglourious *******s
People will only say Avatar probably because it's the first thing on their mind regarding movies.

Wow, that's weird because I was going to say Benjamin Button and thought to myself nobody else would. Nobody else seems to love it like I did, it really hit home some messages to me which have affected me ever since I think. So yeah, Benjamin Button for me too.

The Lord of the Rings trilogy, as always. If we're talking about the best new movie though it would have to be between Avatar and District 9. Watchmen was pretty good, too. I still have yet to see Star Trek but have high hopes.

Tough one. I liked Watchmen and Star Trek as blockbusters.
no great indie releases this year though.

Seriously district 9? I thought that was one of the worst movies of the year, lol, was awful. The hangover (I think it was called) was awesome, hadn't laughed that much and that hard for a long time.

District 9 was fantastic. Why didn't you like it?

I think it was because I just was not expecting that to happen or it to be like that. I went with friends because I knew there was hype and wanted to see it myself. The mock documentary style was annoying and so was the South African accent. I just wasn't impressed, the story line wasn't too bad, just the way it was filmed with that infuriating guy.

Hi5! I thought Star Trek was brilliant, your hopes should remain high :D.

District 9 must really be a Marmite film! Every single opinion I've heard of it is either love or hate. I agree the mockumentary style takes a lot of getting used to and the accents were unbearable :P but if you manage to see past those things, it is a truly awesome film.
Inglorious could have been my best film on a different year, but there was so much great cinema this year (can't believe someone said it was a rubbish year for it!). I'm surprised nobody here has mentioned Up because I've heard so many people praise it endlessly. Personally I think it was pretty average for a Pixar flick.

So really you were put off because it defied your expectations? I went in with an open mind and ended up loving it. I thought the main character was great as well, he was so believable as a normal person befallen upon all of these unfortunate situations and outcomes. I can't imagine anyone else performing the role quite as well, and I don't think the movie would have been as good if a big name actor was behind the wheel. Alas, I guess it wasn't for everyone!

I watched Star Trek last night and loved it. Definitely one of the best Blockbusters of the year. I had no idea Simon Pegg was in it either so that was a pleasant surprise when he showed up. Great movie, wish I saw it in the cinema.
Same, I've either seen undenying love or extreme hate. Loads of people also claim to dislike it because aparrently its a racist film. Isn't that whats its like for every film though? Some people'll love it, others'll hate it.
I was going to mention Up, but while I enjoyed it I most definitely didn't think it was Pixar's best movie. Light years away from the likes of Toy Story, The Incredibles, Finding Nemo and Monsters Inc. I didn't come away from the movie thinking 'wow that was amazing' like I did with Avatar or District 9, but still, it was a pretty good movie. Just not up there with everyone else this year. Perhaps in the top five, though.

Yep it is a nice surprise :D, so was Leonard Nimoy because I didn't realise he was going to make an appearance either. I hate it when people say D9 is racist. It just shows how they've missed the whole point. And that's exactly what I think of Up (love the bit in bold btw :P).
Edit@Adam: Maybe that's a factor in our differing opinions because I don't think I had even heard of it until not long before I saw it and what I had seen/heard of it didn't give me very high hopes. Personally I think that's a good thing when going to see a film.

Well, it's like with Avatar. One of the most hyped films in years, but I didn't think it lived up to, nor deserved the hype. I gave it 3/5 based purely on the visual effects, and reviews that openly give it 4 or 5/5 whilst saying that everything except the visual effects is pretty shoddy, shouldn't be writing reviews. Bad story, characters and script simply cannot be forgiven all because of fancy 3D effects. They are the foundations of any good film, not effects, which is what annoys me with many reviews, so that's why I gave it the 3/5. 3D is a gimmick, it isn't the future of movies. Most film-makers hate shooting in 3D, and I'm sure as hell glad.

I agree that 3D is a gimmick, and I haven't seen the film in 3D yet so I can't really comment but I have heard that the 3D in Avatar is used more as a depth of field to see into the screen and immerse yourself in the environment rather than flying objects straight into your face and the like.

I don't praise Avatar just because of the effects though. I genuinely thought the characters were great.
Edit: yeah Never, and I think it does the job of putting you in their world extremely well.

The effects are commendable, and definitely the best 3D FX ever produced, yet I was never immersed in "Pandora" (awful name). Probably because I've seen that kind of world of floating mountains and magical forests many times before.

Did you even watch it Blinger (in 3D with required glasses, obviously)?

My fav would have to be The Final Destination, that, was, hilarious or either Ice Age 3. The animation and graphics was really good and never really dissapoints.
I actually though Ice Age 3 was awful, I liked the first two but that one was just lame, can't wait for Toy Story 3 though, until the other day I would of probably said District 9 but Inglorious *******s is amazing so that is the best film of 09 I'd say.

I've just realised that this thread is different to the other in that it asks what the best film you watched in 2009 was, not necessarily one that was released in 2009. I'm guessing I'm right as the two haven't been merged.
So my answer to that would possibly be Requiem For A Dream.

Really? I thought it was my favourite Pixar film in years. I found it laugh out loud funny, tear jerking, exciting. Everything you want from a grown up movie, never mind a child's one!

The actor did a fantastic job.
I'm at a bit of a disadvantage. I've only really seen District 9 and Up so I can only really choose from those two. But, I have to say it will be District 9.

Ice Age 3 was a DISASTER!
I found it never really loses its family appeal charm. It gets predictable sure but it was ok. Not one of the best but for family entertainment, it was ok. Final Destination was the best for me purely because I found it so funny.
